Patriot Ladies Conquer Carver in Non-Conference Contest

Atlanta, GA – In non-conference action on Saturday, the UC Women's Basketball team was aiming to get back into the win column. Battling sickness and short-numbers, the Patriot ladies would overcome the obstacles to bring home a 56-44 win over the Carver College Cougars. The victory pushes the Patriots to 14-8 overall on the season.

After a made basket by the Cougars, UC would get back-to-back threes from Ashley Jackson and Megan Morton to take a 6-2 lead with five minutes to play in the first. Carver would answer, outscoring the Patriots 7-2 over the next three minutes of play to take a 9-8 lead. Cheyenne Madden score her first bucket of the game with 13 seconds left to put UC ahead 10-9 entering the second quarter.

The Patriot offense would explode early in the quarter, going on a 9-2 run including two treys from Shayla Simpson and another from Jackson to open the lead to 19-11. The Cougars would carve into the lead, but UC would stand their ground and hold a four-point advantage at the half 23-19.

The Cumberlands would begin the third much like they did the second quarter, putting together an 8-0 run to take a 31-19 lead. The Cougars would cut the lead down to six at 35-29 with four and a half to play in the third, but the Patriot offense would not be stymied as they would hold a 42-32 lead entering the fourth.

UC would use solid defense coupled with good free-throw shooting to hold off Carver in the fourth quarter to come away with the 56-44 win.

The Patriot Ladies were led by Jackson who notched her first career double-double, tallying 14 points and 11 rebounds. Simpson would add 14 points, six rebounds, four steals, and three blocks in the victory. Madden would come off the bench to chip in 14 points and eight rebounds. Cumberlands would out-rebound Carver 48-31 in the win.

On Thursday, February 8th, The Pats will return to Mid-South Conference action as they host the Tigers of Georgetown College. This will also be UC's Breast Cancer Awareness game as Cumberlands will wear their pink uniforms. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
