Bat Pats Race Past Thorobreds in Route to 13th Straight Win

Williamsburg, KY – On a nice Saturday afternoon where baseball was not originally scheduled to be played at Doyle Buhl Stadium, the Patriots were able to find an opponent as the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University would come to town for a doubleheader. The impromptu double dip would work into UC's favor as they would pick up two wins, earning an 11-4 victory in game one before routing KSU in game two 22-5. The two wins move UC to 17-3 overall on the season. The wins push the Patriots' winning streak to 13 games, the longest streak since 2008 and tying the longest winning streak of the Brad Shelton era.

In game one, the Thorobreds would come out swinging, stringing together three straight base hits including Darian Dull's RBI single to give KSU a 1-0 lead. UC would answer in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double by Raudy Martinez as well as a RBI single from Alex Dominguez to give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage after one. KY State would turn around in the top of the second with a vengeance. The Thorobreds would plate three runs on three hits to take the lead back at 4-3 after one and a half played.

The Pats would tie the game in the third on a sacrifice fly by J.C. Santos, making it 4-4. UC would retake the lead in the fourth on a RBI double by Orley Arellano, pushing the Patriots out front 5-4. Robbie Stroub would add to the lead in the fifth with a RBI single to make it 6-3. In the sixth, the offense for UC turned to the long ball. With one down and two on, Martinez would take to the sky with a three-run moonshot to left, his fifth home run of the year, putting the Patriots up 9-3. After Dominguez reached first on an error, Daniel Diaz would join the party with a two-run shot of his own, his third of the season, to give UC its 11-4 winning score.

The win on the hill would go to Manny Castellano, who struggled with location in the early innings, but would settle down for a solid outing. He earned the win going 6.0 innings allowing four earned runs on six hits and four walks while striking out five. Mason Kleist would pitch a scoreless seventh in the win as well.

Game two was an offensive onslaught by the Patriots. All nine starters for the Patriots would have a hit in this one with eight scoring runs in a 22-5 win. UC put three runs on the board in the first to take a 3-0 lead. KSU would tag two run in the second, but the Patriots added six runs in the second, including a grand slam to center field by Bryan Benz, his fourth home run on the year, to make it 9-3 Patriots.

The Thorobreds tabbed three runs in the top of the third to cut the lead to 9-5, but UC's offense would explode in the bottom of the inning. The Pats would tally 12 runs on eight hits in the frame as they took a 21-5 lead. Santos would add one more run in the fifth on a solo home run, his third of the year, to give the Patriots the 22-5 win.

Colton Easterwood would earn the win going 5.0 innings allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits and three walks while sitting five down on strikes. Alex Briney would throw the final two innings allowing just one hit and one walk while fanning four on strikes in the victory.

The Patriots return to action on Sunday, March 11th as UC welcomes the V-Hawks of Viterbo University to Williamsburg. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 pm. You can catch all the action with live video and stats on the UC Sports Network as Bo Kidd and Brandon Hensley will have the call.
