Box Score 2 Lawrenceburg, GA – With conference play less than a week away, the UC softball team give themselves one more warm-up as they took on top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett Sunday afternoon at the Grizzly Softball Complex. Georgia Gwinnett won both games 7-2, 6-0 to improve to 24-2, while the Patriots move to 5-12.
Sidney Pennycuff was dealing in the circle to start the game one getting the first four Grizzly outs via the strikeout. She retired the side in the second to keep the score 0-0.
Georgia Gwinnett got a three-run homer in the third and a two-run home run in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Patriots battled back in the top of sixth as
Kailin Yantz and
Olivia DeZarn both reached base to lead off the inning. After a fielder's choice,
Tara Comer hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Yantz from third and cutting the deficit to 5-1.
The Grizzly added a pair of runs in the sixth, before the Patriots pushed a run across in the seventh for the 7-2 final.
Amber Hiller singled to lead off the inning and would score on an
Emily Fox double to center.
In game two, Yantz led off the game with double to the game in right-center. Two batters later,
Elisa Mauldin drew a walk and was able to advance into scoring position on a ground out. However, the Patriots couldn't get the run home as Georgia Gwinnett was able to get out of the jam.
The Grizzly took the lead in the bottom of the first as Niki Cook singled and stole two bases before scoring on a RaeQuinn Rossetti double.
Tara Comer was able to get out of the inning keeping the score 1-0.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the third when Georgia Gwinnett scored five runs to make it 6-0.
Sydney Maynard came in relief for Cumberlands and pitched 3.1 innings scattering two hits with one strikeout.
Cumberlands best opportunity came in the seventh as
MiKayla Vires and
Hannah Stephenson singled to lead off the inning. However Georgia Gwinnett got three straight outs for the 6-0 final.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday, March 23, when they host Kentucky Christian for a four game set to open Mid-South Conference play. Friday's games are set to start at 4 p.m., while Saturday's game are slated for 12 p.m. Live video will be available
