Box Score Williamsburg, KY – The second-ranked University of the Cumberlands women's lacrosse team scored the first eight goals and the final eight goals to defeat tenth-ranked Reinhardt 17-6 Wednesday night at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. With the win the Patriots improve to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in AAC play, while the Eagles move to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Cumberlands struck first as
Samantha Tullar found Katherine Brewer for a quick goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Jaclyn Berry netted back-to-back goals to extend the lead to 3-0 four minutes into the first half. The Patriots won the ensuing draw control and on their possession Berry's pass deflected off
Angelica Makoski's stick and into the cage for a goal to make it 4-0.
Samantha Tullar added a goal at the 24:20 mark, off an assist from
Elizabeth Fladung, to make it 5-0. Berry recorded two of UC's next three goals to put the Patriots ahead 8-0 with 13:33 remaining. Defensively,
Emily Crump was solid in the cage make six saves in the first 18 minutes of the game to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Amanda Geiger netted an unassisted goal to get Reinhardt on the board and cut the lead to 8-1. The Eagles went on a 5-1 run over the final ten minutes of the first half to cut the lead to 9-6 at the break.
The Patriots rebounded in the second half as
Tristyn Hudson scooped the ground ball of an Eagles' turnover and put a well-placed shot to the top left corner of the cage for a goal making it 10-6. Makoski converted a free position attempt before Tullar netted a man-up goal to extend UC's lead to 12-6. After a pair of free position goals, the Berry-Tullar connection hooked up twice giving the Patriots a 16-6 lead.
Amanda Phillips added an unassisted goal for the 17-6 final.
It marks the second straight game that the Patriots defensive has held their opponent scoreless in the second half. Tonight, Cumberlands limited Reinhardt to three shots, all of which were saved, and forced 23 turnovers over the last 30 minutes.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Berry who tied a career-high with seven goals and nine points, while recording a career-high six caused turnovers. Tullar added four goals and two assists, while Hudson and Brewer chipped in three points apiece.
Becan Hennighan scooped a team-high six ground balls. Hennighan and
Jessica Truelove each tallied three caused turnovers, while
Emily Heim finished with four draw controls and four ground balls. Crump finishes the game with 11 saves, making double-digit stops for the third time this season.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday, March 23, when they host top-ranked and defending NAIA champions SCAD. The game is slated for 1 p.m. with live video available
