Seven Goal Third Quarter Leads to Patriots Win

Box Score Atchison, KS – The eighth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team netted seven goals in the third quarter to help them extend their win streak to three straight after a 12-8 win over Montreat Friday night.  With the win the Patriots improve to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the AAC, while the Cavaliers move to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The Patriots struck first as Jake Morgan found Dylan Crouch for a goal just over a minute into the first quarter.  Montreat looked to even the score with 4:30 left but Chris Jackson's shot hit the post, while Will Settle saves a Cody Bischoff shot keep the Cavaliers scoreless.  Cumberlands extended their lead to 2-0 as Crouch recorded an unassisted goal with two seconds left in the opening period. 

Montreat netted back-to-back goals to start the second quarter and even the score at 2-2 with 4:04 remaining. UC looked to regain control two minutes later as Whitten McCune sent a laser towards the cage but it hit off the crossbar.  Thirty seconds later, Sam Collinson put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage to give Cumberlands a 3-2 lead at half.

UC extended their lead to 4-2 to start the third quarter as Crouch found Justin Darley cutting towards the cage for a goal with 13:23 remaining.  The two teams traded goals, before Henry Quaye netted an unassisted goal to make 6-3.  Crouch, Caleb Elerick, and Whitten McCune each added a goal to make it 9-3 with 1:20 remaining.  Crouch netted his career-high fifth goal of the game with two second remaining to give UC a 10-3 advantage after three quarters.

Montreat rallied in fourth quarter with five unanswered goals over a 12 minute span, to cut the lead to 10-8.  With just over a minute remaining, Quaye found Darley for goal to make it 11-8.  Nick DiFranco scooped the ground ball off the ensuing faceoff and found Quaye for a goal for the 12-8 final.

Crouch led the way for the Patriots with five goals and an assist, while Quaye added three points. Swann went 11-22 on the faceoff and scooped eight ground balls.  Darley chipped in a pair of goals and was one of four Patriots to record four ground balls.

Will Settle made seven saves in the contest, including four in the third quarter. 

The Patriots will return to the field Saturday, March 24, when they face Columbia College in a neutral site game. The game is set for 12 p.m.
