Second-Ranked Patriots Overpowers St. Andrews 25-3

Box Score Williamsburg, KY – A day after suffering their first setback of the season, the second-ranked University of the Cumberlands responded with a plethora of scoring as they defeated St. Andrews 25-3 Saturday afternoon at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. With the win the Patriots secured their second straight ten win season as the move to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play.

Cumberlands began the game by winning the first two draw controls and turning them into goals to give UC a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the first half.  Two minutes later Briana Kucis forced a Knights turnover and pass it to Samantha Tullar who found Katherine Brewer for a goal to extend the lead to 3-0. The two teams traded goals before Amanda Phillips converted a free position attempt to make it 5-1 with 21:16 remaining.  Elizabeth Fladung won the ensuing draw control and on the Patriots possession Emily Heim found Jaclyn Berry in front of the cage for a goal.  Each team added a goals, before Berry and Heim accounted for the next four Patriot goals to extend the lead to 11-2 midway through the first half.

After a Phillips goal, Brewer's free position attempt was saved by Mia Ortiz however Brewer was able to scoop the ground ball and find the back of the cage to make it 13-2 with 11:18 remaining in the first half. The score stayed that way until the 5:51 mark when Tullar found Tristyn Hudson cutting towards the cage for a goal.   Shea West added a late goal to give UC a 15-2 lead at half.

The Patriots continued their strong play in the second half outscoring the Knights 10-1.  Rachael Giles netted her second goal of the season, off an assist from Berry, 46 second into the half.  Both team notched a goal, before Brewer found Tullar in the middle of the field, who put a well-placed shot inside the far post for a goal making it 18-3.  Fladung added a man-down goal, while Angelica Makoski and Kelsey Fearing each notched a goal as part of a 7-0 run to end the game for the 25-5 final.

Leading to the way for the Patriots was Berry who recorded six goals, three assists to tie her career-high with nine points.  Tullar added eight points, eight draw controls, and a pair of ground balls, while Heim finished with seven points, six draw controls, and four caused turnovers.  Fladung chipped in six draw controsl and four ground balls.

Emily Crump and Emily Cabrera each made three saves in goal.  Kucis scooped a team-high five ground balls to go along with three caused turnovers.

The Patriots will return to the field Wednesday, March 84, when they travel to Athens, TN to face seventh-ranked and defending AAC champions Tennessee Wesleyan. The game is slated for 12 p.m. with live stats here.
