Crump’s Career Day Leads Second-Ranked Patriots over Seventh-Ranked Bulldogs

Athens, TN – Emily Crump set a Patriots program record with 21 saves to lead the second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team to a 13-7 win over seventh-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon at the Bulldogs Lacrosse Complex.  With the win the Patriots improve to 12-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Tennessee Wesleyan moves to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

Tennessee Wesleyan scored three unanswered goals to start the game and take a 3-0 lead with 23:42 remaining in the first half.  Less than a minute later, Emily Heim netted a man-down goal to cut the deficit to 3-1.  Tennessee Wesleyan netted another goal, before Samantha Tullar scored back-to-back goals as the Patriots cut the deficit to 4-3 with 19:23 remaining.  Jaclyn Berry converted a free position goal to even the score at 4-4 midway through the first half.  After the two teams traded goals, Tennessee Wesleyan looked to retake the lead however Crump made six saves in a three minute span to keep the game even.  Minutes later, Berry put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage to give Cumberlands a 6-5 advantage.  Rachael Giles and Katherine Brewer each added a goal to give the Patriots an 8-5 lead at the break.

The Patriots continued their strong play in the second half outscoring the Bulldogs 5-2.  Cumberlands forced a turnover in Bulldog territory and on the ensuing possession Berry found Amanda Phillips cutting towards the cage for a goal.  Tullar added a free position goal, before Heim found Angelica Makoski for a goal to extend Cumberlands lead to 11-5 ten minutes in the half.  Tennessee Wesleyan scored a pair of goals over the course of six minutes to cut the lead to 11-7.  Giles and Brewer both netted a goal for the 13-7 final.

The win marks Cumberlands first victory over Tennessee Wesleyan in program history and their sixth win over a team either ranked or receiving votes this season. UC limited the Bulldogs to 1-14 on free position attempt with ten of those stops were made by Crump.

Leading to the way for the Patriots was Crump who tallied 13 of her career-high 21 saves in the first half. Tullar finished with four goals, an assists, and four draw controls, while Berry chipped in three points.  Makoski, Heim, Brewer and Giles tallied two points apiece.  Elizabeth Fladung scooped three draw controls, while Jessica Truelove finished with a team-high two caused turnovers.

The Patriots will return to the field Saturday, March 31, when they travel to West Point, GA to face AAC foe Point. The game is slated for 1 p.m. with live stats here.
