West Point, GA – Samantha Tullar and
Jaclyn Berry combined for 12 goals as the second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team defeated Point 18-6 in conference play, Saturday afternoon at River Bowl Stadium. With the win the Patriots improve to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play, while the Skyhawks moves to 5-7 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
The Patriots came out firing as Tullar netted back-to-back goals to give UC a 2-0 lead three minutes in. Point looked to get on the board but
Emily Crump saved a Grace Beardsley free position attempt to keep the score 2-0. The two teams traded goals twice before
Shea West netted an unassisted goal to make it 5-2 with 15:28 remaining.
Elizabeth Fladung and
Amanda Phillips each added a goal to extend the Patriots lead to 6-2 with 11:39 left in the first half. After a pair of Crump saves, Tullar put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage to give UC an 8-2 lead. That goal marks Tullar's 100
th point of the season and the second straight year she has reached that milestone. The Skyhawks scored two of the next three goals to cut the lead to 8-4 with 4:00 minutes remaining. Cumberlands responded with four unanswered goals, including two from Berry, to take a 12-4 lead into halftime.
The Skyhawks cut into the Patriots lead to start the second half as Beardsley found Kristen Owns for a goal four minutes into the second half. Tullar scooped the ensuing draw control and netted an unassisted goal ten seconds later to make it 13-5. That goal sparked a 6-0 run for the Patriots that spanned nearly 25 minutes as Tullar, Berry, and Makoski each scored twice in the half. The Skyhawks added a man-up goal in the final seconds for the 18-6 final.
Leading to the way for the Patriots was Tullar who tallied seven goals, an assist, and scooped a game-high 12 draw controls. Berry added six points and four draw controls, while Makoski recorded her third hat trick of the season.
Elizabeth Fladung scooped a team-high six ground balls. Crump finished with eight saves in the game and held Point to 1-8 on free position opportunities.
The Patriots will return to the field Tuesday, April 3, when they travel to Georgetown, KY to face the eighth-ranked Tigers of Georgetown. The game is slated for 6 p.m. with live video
