Box Score 2 Williamsburg, KY – The UC softball team got two strong pitching performance, but defensive miscues proved to be the difference as the Patriots fell to 11
th-ranked Lindsey Wilson 4-2 and 7-1 Friday afternoon at the UC Softball Complex. With the wins the Blue Raiders improve to 22-5 overall and 4-0 in MSC play, while the Patriots move to 8-16 and 3-3 in conference play.
Sidney Pennycuff began the day by striking out five of the first six batters she faces to keep the game scoreless after the second inning.
Lindsey Wilson scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead. The Patriots responded in the bottom of the inning as
Lexi Jones doubled to lead off the inning.
Emily Fox singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt to give UC runners in scoring position.
Kailin Yantz followed with an RBI groundout scoring Jones and cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The score remained that way until the fifth when the Blue Raiders plated two more runners to extend their lead to 4-1. Cumberlands looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth as
Elisa Mauldin hit a one-out RBI triple to make it 4-2. However, that was the closest the Patriots would get as Lindsey Wilson got back-to-back outs to get out of the inning.
Pennycuff pitched 7 innings allowing four runs, two earned, and struck out 11, which tied her career high. Mauldin went 2-3 with an RBI, while Jones finished 1-3 with a run scored.
After a scoreless first inning in game two, Lindsey Wilson added a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Sydney Maynard was able to get out of a base loaded jam to keep the score at 1-0.
Cumberlands was quick to respond as
Morgan Santos singled to lead off the bottom of the second and advanced to second on a sac bunt.
Emily Fox drove a double to right-center scoring Santos and tying the score at 1-1.
The score remained that way until the fourth when Lindsey Wilson added two runs in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Patriots put runners on in both the fourth and fifth inning but were unable to bring them around to score.
Lindsey Wilson added two more runs in the top of sixth to make it 5-1. Santos and
Hannah Stephenson tallied back-to-back hits to lead off the bottom of the sixth.
Lexi Jones reached base on a fielder's choice as the Blue Raiders got Santos out at the plate to keep the score 5-1. Lindsey Wilson scored two runs in seventh for the 7-1 final.
Leading the way for UC was Mauldin who went 3-3 with a walk. Santos and Fox each added a pair of hits in the game. Maynard pitched 6.0 innings scattering 11 hits, allowing five runs, four of which were earned, and two strikeouts.
The Patriots will return to the field Saturday, March 31, when they host Lindsey Wilson for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 12 p.m. Live video will be available
