Williamsburg, KY – Mark O'Bryant scored the game-winning goal with two seconds left in overtime as (RV) Lourdes knocked off the seventh-ranked University of the Cumberlands men's lacrosse team 6-5 Thursday afternoon at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. With the win the Gray Wolves improve to 3-1, while the Patriots fall to 4-2.
The Patriots struck first a
Caleb Elerick wrapped around the cage for a goal six minutes into the first quarter. Cumberlands looked to extend their lead however Jared Husiskens made three of his ten saves to keep the lead a 1-0.
Lourdes scored three unanswered goals to start the second period and take a 3-1 lead with 7:37 remain in the first half. A minute later
Jake Morgan started a transition to
Jake Mitchell who found Elerick in cutting towards the cage for a goal to cut the deficit to 3-2. Lourdes added an unassisted goal before Elerick completed his first half hat trick with a goal at the 2:03 mark to make it 4-3 in favor of the Gray Wolves at half.
Cumberlands took advantage of a Gray Wolves penalty as
Sam Collinson found
Whitten McCune for a man-up goal to even the score at 4-4. The score remained that way until the 11:45 mark as Elerick found
Henry Quaye for a goal to put UC in front 5-4. Cumberlands looked to extend their lead but couldn't convert keeping the score 5-4 heading into the fourth quarter.
Three minutes into the fourth quarter O'Byrant netted the equalizer tying the game at 5-5. Lourdes outshot the Patriots 8-3 in the period, but
Will Settle made six of his game-high 13 saves, including two in the final two minutes, to keep the Patriots in the game and force overtime.
Lourdes won the opening faceoff of the extra time but
Bryan Morgan forced a Gray Wolves turnover to give the Patriots possession. UC cleared the ball, however an unforced turnover gave the ball back to Lourdes. Settle stopped a Tanner Jaramillo shot with 37 seconds left, but O'Bryant found the back of the net with two seconds remaining for the 6-5 final.
Morgan finished with eight ground balls and two caused turnovers, while
Nick DiFranco recorded four caused turnovers and scooped seven ground balls.
The Patriots will return to the field Saturday, March 10, when they host sixth-ranked Sienna Heights. The game is slated for 7 p.m. with live video available
