Williamsburg, KY – UC Baseball has played some amazing ball in 2018 and it did not stop on Tuesday night as they hosted rival Union College. Scoring in five different innings, UC would put together a big five-run seventh inning including a walk-off three-run home run to take the 12-2 in over the Bulldogs. The Patriots have now won 31 of their last 32 and are 35-4 overall on the season.
The start would go to
Anthony Martinez who has been very sharp throughout the season and continued that trend in this game. The Patriots would go to work early scoring two in the bottom of the first, one on an error by the Bulldog shortstop with the other on a RBI single from
Daniel Diaz, giving UC an early 2-0 lead. Union would cut into the lead in the top of the second on a solo home run from Francisco Ogando, making it 2-1 Cumberlands.
The Patriots would respond in the third, scoring two more on a RBI groundout by
Raudy Martinez and a sacrifice fly by
Bryan Benz, extending their lead to 4-1. In the fourth, UC would string together four hits including RBI singles from both
Orley Arellano and
Alex Dominguez to make it 6-1 Pats.
Union's Ogando would once again cut into the lead with another solo home run in the top of the fifth, making it a 6-2 Cumberlands lead. In the sixth, the Patriots would strike again with another RBI single from
Andrew Ramos, making it a 7-2 Patriots lead.
In the seventh, Cumberlands would come through with the big inning they had strived for a number of times earlier in the game.
J.C. Santos would get things started on the first pitch as he would hit his sixth home run of the season to left, pushing the lead to 8-2. Arellano would add another run on a sacrifice fly, bringing home
Reed Spata later in the inning to extend the lead to 9-2. With two on and one down, Dominguez would come up big for the Patriots, blasting a walk-off three-run home run to left, his fourth home run of the year, to give UC the 12-2 win in run-rule fashion after seven innings of play.
Martinez would earn his fourth win of the year in his fourth complete game pitched. He allowed just two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four in the victory. The loss would be tagged to J.D. Cozad for Union.
The Patriots return to action on Wednesday, April 11
th as they host a single game against Hiwassee College at 2 pm.
