Men’s Lacrosse Notches First Ten Win Season behind Stifling Defense

Box Score Wilmore, KY – The sixth-ranked UC men's lacrosse team forced tallied 12 caused turnovers and 53 ground balls, while limiting Asbury to three goals as the Patriots defeated the Eagles 8-3 Tuesday night to record their first ten-win season in program history. With the win the Patriots improve to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in AAC play, while the Eagles move to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

Asbury struck first as Jake Butler netted an unassisted goal two minutes into the first quarter.  Cumberlands responded as Sam Collinson found Jake Mitchell for a transition goal to tie the game at 1-1.  Two minutes later, Caleb Elerick connected with Dalton Smith for a goal to give UC a 2-1 lead with 5:57 remaining.  Kody Swann won the ensuing faceoff and on the Patriots possession Preston Brooks put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage to extend the lead to 3-1. Cumberlands looked to score again but Asbury made three saves to keep the score 3-1 after the opening quarter.

The score remained that way until the 10:11 mark in the second quarter as Crouch found Elerick for a goal to give UC a 4-1 advantage.  After forcing an Eagles turnover, Elerick found Whitten McCune for a goal to make it 5-1 in favor of the Patriots midway through the second period.  Asbury added a goal in the final minute to cut the lead to 5-2 at halftime.

Cumberlands came out strong in the second half winning the opening faceoff.  On UC's possession Elerick found McCune in front of the cage for a goal to make it 6-2.  The score remained that way until the 1:44 mark as Crouch and Elerick connected for the second time in the game to give UC a 7-2 lead.  The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter for the 8-3 final.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Elerick, who netted a pair of goals and dished out three assists.  Brooks, Crouch, Collinson, and McCune finished with two points apiece.  Swann went 13-14 on faceoffs with six ground balls.

Jake Morgan and Bryan Morgan each notched four turnovers in the game.  Jake Morgan also scooped a game-high 13 ground balls.  Nick DiFranco added nine ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Mitchell scooped four ground balls.  Will Settle made 11 saves in the win, including six in the second half.

The Patriots will return to the field Friday, April 13, when they travel to Barbourville, KY to take on Union in theirregular season finale.  The game is set for 7:30 p.m.
