Wilmore, KY – The second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team wrapped up their regular season with a 24-2 win over Asbury Thursday night. With the win, the Patriots finish a perfect 9-0 against the AAC to claim their first AAC regular season title in program history.
Cumberlands (17-1; 9-0) jumped out to a quick lead as
Jaclyn Berry netted three of the first four goals of the contest to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead 21:33 remaining in the first half.
Samantha Tullar scored three straight goals, over a two minute span, to extend the lead to 7-0. The two teams traded goals, before
Elizabeth Fladung forced an Eagles turnover, raced up field a connected with the back of the cage for an unassisted goal. Three minutes later, Tullar found
Rachael Giles in front in the cage for a goal to extend UC's lead to 10-1 with 12:43 left. Berry then connected with Katherine Brewer,
Angelica Makoski, and Tristyn Huson for a goal each to give the Patriots a 13-1 lead at the break.
The Patriots continued the offensive onslaught as Heim netted an unassisted goal four minutes into the second half. UC won the ensuing draw control and on the Patriots possession Tullar connected with Brewer for a goal to make it 16-1. Cumberlands took advantage of an Asbury penalty as Berry found Hudson for a man-up goal with 19:31 remaining. UC added three more goals before Sarah Myhand netted an unassisted goal for the Eagles to cut the lead to 19-2 with 13:11 left. Cumberlands responded quickly as Tullar put a well-placed shot past the goalie two minutes later.
Amanda Phillips tallied a goal and two assists as part of four unanswered goals for the 24-2 final.
Leading to the way for the Patriots was Berry, who recorded six goals, six assists, four caused turnovers and four ground balls. Tullar added eight points and five draw controls, while Heim and Makowski finished with four points apiece. Giles, Phillips, and Brewer chipped in three points apiece.
Emily Crump and
Emily Cabrera combined for nine saves.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday, April 20, when they host the winner of the #4 Reinhardt-#5 Columbia game in the semifinals of the AAC Tournament. The game is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. with live video available
