Williamsburg, KY – UC Softball saw game one of today's doubleheader get away from them, but would bounce back in game two to earn the win and split on the day with the Tigers of Georgetown College at the UC Softball Complex on Friday. The Patriots improve their record to 13-23 on the year and 6-10 in Mid-South Conference play.
In game one, the Patriots would get an early 1-0 lead after a double from
MiKayla Vires was followed by another double from
Emily Fox to drive her home in the bottom of the second. An error on pitcher
Sidney Pennycuff would snowball the Tiger offense in the third as Georgetown would plate four runs on six hits in the inning, giving them a 4-1 lead. The Tigers added an insurance run in the fifth to take a 5-1 win over the Patriots.
Pennycuff would be tagged with the loss after going the distance with seven innings of work, but allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out just two in the contest.
Game two was a different story as UC would work through adversity while coming up with timely defensive plays as well as clutch hitting for the victory. A pair of errors in the top of the first would put runners on, but the Patriots came up with an unorthodox 1-3-2 double play to end the inning and get out of the jam. Cumberlands would also take the lead again in this one early, this time on a double by
Elisa Mauldin followed by a RBI single from
Tara Comer to make it 1-0 Pats.
Georgetown would take advantage of another error by UC in the top of the sixth as a double from Chaselyn Allgeier would put her on third after a throwing error. A safety squeeze would bring her home later in the inning, tying the game at 1-1. UC would answer though in the bottom of the inning as the Patriots would put two on. After two Patriots were retired, Kailyn Yantz would play hero of the contest as she would hit a single to left-center, bringing home two to take a 3-1 lead. The Tigers would plate one run in the seventh, but would be held off as Cumberlands would earn the 3-2 win.
Sydney Maynard would throw a gem of a game to earn the win in game two for UC. She tallied seven innings of work allowing two earned runs on six hits while sitting two down on strikes.
