Patriots Take One from Phoenix in Weekend Series

Lebanon, TN – The UC softball team plated a season-high 11 runs to take one of the four games against Cumberland over the two days.  After the series the Patriots move to 15-29 overall and 8-16 in MSC play, while the Phoenix move to 31-20 overall and 9-15 in conference play.

The series began with Cumberland jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth when Elisa Mauldin hit a one-out double.  Hannah Stephenson singled, before MiKayla Vires drove a two-run double down the leftfield line to put the Patriots ahead 2-1.

UC extended their lead the next inning as Madison Huber and Kailin Yantz recorded back-to-back one out hits.  With runners in scoring position Morgan Santos hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Huber to give the Patriots a 3-1 lead.

The Phoenix responded in the bottom of the fifth with two homers as part of an eight run inning to retake the lead 9-3.  Cumberlands notched a run in the six, before the Phoenix added three in bottom half for the 12-4 final.

The second game was a pitchers dual as Sydney Maynard and Morgan Arndt battled.  It was Cumberland who pulled out the 3-0 win.  The Patriots had a runner on third in three different innings but were unable to push the run across.

On Saturday, Cumberlands came out swinging scoring three runs in the top of the first.  With Mauldin and Stephenson on base, Vires hit an RBI double to give UC an early 1-0 lead.  Tara Comer followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Phoenix plated two in the first, before Santos crushed a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Patriots a 5-2 lead.  Cumberland cut the lead to 5-3 as Paola Del Valle hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

Haley Kilburn notched a two-run double in the third and later scored to extend UC's lead to 8-3.  Mauldin and Stephenson each crossed the plate in the fourth giving Cumberlands a 10-3 lead. Cumberland scored one in the fourth to cut the lead to 10-4.

The score remained that way until the seventh when Huber double and scored on a Mauldin double for the 11-4 final.

The final game started out as a pitchers dual as both teams were held scoreless for the first four innings.  Cumberland struck with four runs in the fifth and added a run in the sixth for the 5-0 win.
