Game Recap: Softball |

Patriots Fall Twice in Regular Season Finale

Portsmouth, OH – The University of the Cumberlands softball team wrapped up their 2018 regular season at Shawnee State.  UC put up a valiant effort but dropped the doubleheader 4-0, 5-1 Saturday afternoon.  With the wins the Bears improve to 25-20 overall and 12-15 in MSC play, while the Patriots move to 16-32 overall and 9-19 in conference play.

UC looked to get on the board early as Kailin Yantz and Elisa Mauldin both reached base on walks in the first.  Yantz advanced to third on a fielder's choice however the Patriots were unable to bring her home as MiKayla Vires lined out.

That was the closest the Patriots got as Tatum Wise retired the next 17 batters straight before Coari Robertson reached base on an error.  Tatum got Emily Fox to line out to complete the no-hitter.

Sidney Pennycuff started off strong again keeping Shawnee State scoreless through the first three innings.  The Bears got back-to-back singles in the fourth to score a run and take a 1-0 lead.  Shawnee State added two in the fifth and one in the sixth for the 4-0 final.

Pennycuff pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits and four runs, while striking out three.

In the second game, the two teams combined for one hit after the second inning.  Shawnee State struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Shawnee State added a run in the fifth to extend their lead to 3-0.

UC looked to rally in the sixth as Haley Kilburn was hit by the pitch to lead off and advanced to second on an Emily Fox single.  Madison Huber hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Shawnee State added two in the bottom of the sixth to give the Bears a 5-1 advantage.  The Patriots put two runners on in the seventh however they could bring them home for the 5-1 final.

Mauldin led the Patriots going 1-1 with three walks, while Huber went 1-3 with an RBI.  Sydney Maynard pitched a complete game, scattering nine hits and five runs with a pair of strikeouts.

The Patriots will enter the MSC tournament as the seventh-seed and face face second-seed Lindsey Wilson Friday, May 4, at 1:30 p.m. The MSC tournament will take place at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, KY.
