Box Score Williamsburg, KY – The second-ranked UC women's lacrosse team used a strong second half, including nine saves by
Emily Cabrera, to defeated Lee in their final non-conference game of the season, Thursday night at James H. Taylor, II Stadium. With the win the Patriots improve to 15-1, while the Flames move to 7-7.
Cumberlands struck first as
Samantha Tullar netted an unassisted goal, 55 seconds into the game to give the Patriots an early lead. Lee took a 2-1 lead, before UC responded with back-to-back goals from Tullar to put UC ahead 3-2 with 23:47 remaining. The two teams traded goals, before
Jaclyn Berry found
Shea West in front of the cage for a goal to make it 5-3 midway through the first half. Berry scooped the draw control and on the ensuing possession she converted a free position goal for her 100
th point of the season. Berry becomes just the second Patriot freshman to notch 100 points in a season.
Two minutes later,
Emily Heim connected with Berry to extend UC's lead to 7-3 with 13:00 remaining. Lee responded scoring four of the next five goals to cut the lead to 8-7 with 8:04 left. UC responded as Berry and Tullar ran a give-and-go for a goal to give Cumberlands a two goal advantage. The score remained that way until the 3:45 mark when Berry found Heim cutting towards the net for a goal to extend the lead to 10-7. The Flames added a pair of goals before the half to cut the lead to 10-9 at the break.
Three minutes into the second half Brianne Schapira netted the equalizer to tie the game 10-10. Cumberlands responded as the Berry-Heim connection hooked up for a goal to put UC back in front 11-10. That goal sparked a 5-0 run for the Patriots, over the course of six minutes, to give Cumberlands a 15-10 lead with 20:16 remaining. The Flames looked to cut into the lead, however Cabrera made five saves over a three minute span to keep Lee off the board. Lee added a man-up goal, before Katherine Brewer scooped a ground ball, off a Tullar shot, and fired it home to make it 16-11. After Lee scored twice, Brewer and Makowski netted a pair of goals each give UC a 20-13 advantage with 9:19 remaining. The Flames recorded three straight goals, before Berry and Tullar each found the back of the cage for the 22-16 final.
Leading to the way for the Patriots was Tullar who tallied six goals, five assist, and scooped a team-high nine draw controls. Berry added five goals and three assists, while Heim recorded her fourth hat trick of the season.
Cabrera's nine saves are the most she has made since February 26, 2017 when she stopped 15 shots in a win over Charleston.
Jessica Truelove notched three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Brewer chipped in three ground balls.
The Patriots will return to the field Saturday, April 7, when they host Brenau in their home finale. The game is scheduled for 2 p.m. with live video available
