Bowling Green, KY – The top-seeded UC Baseball Patriots returned to action on Sunday, May 6
th for their second game of the Mid-South Conference Tournament, the winner's bracket finals, against the second-seeded Tigers of Campbellsville University. Campbellsville would come out of the gate strong, tallying an early 11-0 lead, but the resilient Patriots would battle back. Unfortunately, UC could not come up with enough runs in the comeback, falling to the Tigers 13-9. The loss pushes UC to the elimination bracket and now to 45-8 overall on the year.
Anthony Martinez was handed the ball for today's start, but he was tagged early by the Tigers. After a double, a single, and a walk to load the bases with no outs, Marco Murillo would smash the first pitch of his at-bat deep to left for a grand slam, his sixth home run of the year, pushing CU out front early 4-0. Campbellsville would add a run in the second along with two in the third to take a 7-0 lead after three.
Murillo would strike for the Tigers again in the fourth, sending a two-run shot over the left field fence for his seventh home run on the year. They would add another run in the fourth along with one in the fifth to take an 11-0 lead over the Patriots. Then, UC's offense would get started. In the bottom of the inning, the Patriots would see a pair of home runs help cut into the lead. First, after a
Bryan Benz single,
J.C. Santos would send one out of the park to right field, his ninth of the season, to make it 11-2. Later in the frame, with two on and two down,
Raudy Martinez would hit one deep to left for his 15
th home run on the season, cutting the lead nearly in half at 11-5.
A two-run double by David Montoya would extend the lead back out to eight for the Tigers in the top of the sixth, but UC's offense was not done. With runners on the corners, a single by
Orley Arellano would bring home Santos as Cumberlands would continue to cut into the lead at 13-6.
Robbie Stroub would also double home a run in the seventh to make it 13-7 after seven complete. After a scoreless inning for both teams in the eighth, UC would hold Campbellsville to no runs in the ninth, needing six to take it to extras.
With two down, UC would plate one run on a RBI double by Santos and a RBI single by Stroub, but that would be all the Patriots could grab as the Tigers would come away victorious over UC 13-9.
The loss would be credited to
Anthony Martinez who went three innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Colton Easterwood also pitched a pair of innings, but gave up six runs on six hits and a pair of walks.
Manny Castellano would come in to finish out the game for UC, throwing the final four innings of play allowing no runs on five hits and a walk while fanning three on strikes.
The Patriots now move to the finals of the elimination bracket for a chance to play in the MSC Tournament Championship on Monday morning at 9:30 central daylight time. They will take on the winner of Georgetown and Cumberland University later on Sunday evening at Bowling Green Ballpark. You can catch the game live online simulcast on the Mid-South Conference Sports Network and the Sporting Times Broadcast Network.
