Grand Rapids, MI – Jaclyn Berry and
Samantha Tullar recorded 14 points apiece to lead the second-seed UC Women's Lacrosse team to a 24-13 win over seventh-seed Siena Heights in the quarterfinals of the NAIA Invitational Wednesday afternoon at the AQ Athletic Field. With the win the Patriots advance to the semifinals and improve to 20-1 on the season, while the Saints move to 13-4.
The Patriots struck first as
Emily Heim found Berry in front of the cage for a goal just over a minute into the game. Siena Heights netted back-to-back goals before Berry connected with Tullar for the equalizer with 25:16 left. The two teams traded goals, before Tullar put a well-placed shot into the back of the cage to give UC a 4-3 lead. Cumberlands never trailed from the point forward as Berry score two unanswered to extend the lead to 6-3 midway through the first half. Siena Heights tallied three of the next four goals to cut the lead to 7-6. UC responded with a 9-3 run, over the course of the last 11 minutes of the first half, to take a 16-9 lead at the break. Berry and Tullar combined for seven of those goals, while
Katie Brewer netted the final two goals of the half.
Cumberlands carried the momentum into the second half as Brewer found Berry for a transition goal, 30 seconds in, to extend the lead to 17-9. Tullar connected with Berry twice before a Saints' tallied back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 19-11 with 22:04 remaining. Heim won the ensuing draw control and found Tullar cutting towards the cage for a goal to make it 20-11. That goal sparked a 4-0 run for the Patriots, which gave UC a 24-11 lead with 5:38 remaining. Siena Heights scored two unanswered goals for the 24-13 final.
Leading the way for the Patriots was Berry, who set a new program record with 11 goals, while her 14 points tied the program record. Berry also added six draw controls, while Tullar tied her career-high with 14 points (nine goals, five assists). Heim dished out four assists and a game-high seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. Brewer chipped in three points, while
Angelica Makoski added a pair of goals.
Emily Crump made eight saves, including seven in the first half, to notch the win.
Amanda Phillips scooped her 100
th ground ball of her career in the victory. UC's backline of
Jessica Truelove,
Becan Hennighan,
Briana Kucis, and
Elizabeth Fladung combined for eight ground balls and a caused turnover.
The Patriots will return to the field Friday to take on third-seed Indiana Tech in the NAIA Invitational semifinals. The game is set for 10 a.m. with live stats available
