Waleska, GA – The University of the Cumberlands women's soccer team hit the pitch running recording a 3-1 win over the Reinhardt Eagles to open their 2018 season.
Sara Randez tallied five points, including a pair of goals, to lead the way for the Patriots.
UC looked to score early notching three shots on goal in the first four minutes but couldn't convert. In the fifth minute, the Patriots (1-0) struck first, as Randez capitalized off a miss cleared ball by the Eagles defense, sending a lob shot over the goalies head to give Cumberlands the 1-0 lead. The Patriots looked to extend their lead outshooting Reinhardt 6-1 over the last 40 minutes of the first half but neither team scored keeping the game 1-0 at the break.
Two minutes into the second half Reinhardt tied the game 1-1 on an unassisted goal by Mary Kate Williamson. The score remained that way until the 74
th minute when Randez took advantage of a free kick, placing the ball in the lower left corner of the net for the 2-1 lead. Cumberlands added an insurance goal in the 85
th minute as Randez passed the ball forward to
Shelby Little, who got behind the defensive for a 1-vs-1 with the goalie for the 3-1 final.
Randez's five points is a new career high, surpassing her previous career high of four set back on October 20, 2017.
Christie Funk tallied two saves to improve to 1-0 on the season.
It marks the second straight year that Cumberlands defeated Reinhardt in its season opener and the Patriots improve to 3-1 in season openers under Head Coach
Steve Hamilton.
The Pats will return to action Friday, August 24, when they host Asbury College at 7:30 p.m. for their season home opener at the UC Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. Live video of the game will be available
