Williamsburg, KY – University of the Cumberlands women's soccer team had four freshman net their first career goal as the Patriots defeated Asbury 5-0 in their home opener Friday night at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. With the win, the Patriots improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 0-1.
The Patriots were in control of the game right from the opening kick, however Asbury kept the game scoreless for the first 20 minutes. UC got on the board in the 21' minute as
Shelby Little received a pass from
Laura Navajas deep in the corner and put a well-placed shot into the net to give Cumberlands a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later,
Alanna Skinner sent a corner kick into the box for
Emma Chambers, who netted her first career goal, to push the score 2-0. Patriots continued to control the possession throughout the first half and in the 43' minute
Selena Barnett dribbled up the left side line and fired a shot to the upper right corner of the net from 18 yards out to give the Patriots a 3-0 at the break.
Second half started in similar to the first half with UC controlling time of possession.
Alexis Kingsley cross was deflected off the Asbury goalie right to
Jenna Rockwell, who notched her first career goal to push the led 4-0. However, the Patriots were not done yet. As
Laura Irujo headed the ball into the net off a Skinner corner kick to tab her first career goal and give UC the 5-0 victory.
Christie Funk and
Kendal Bouchard combined for three saves and UC's first shut-out of the season. Skinner led the way offensively with a pair of assist, while Little recorded a goal in back-to-back games for just the second time in her Patriot career.
Cumberlands will return to action Monday, August 27, when they travel to Bluefield, to take on the Rams, with kickoff set for 4 p.m.
