Marvin van der Made scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to propel University of the Cumberlands men's soccer to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Bethel University in its home opener on Friday night at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
Cumberlands (1-0-1) and Bethel (0-1-0) played a scoreless first half with Bethel holding a 10-6 edge in shots, including a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Midfielder
Filip Milivojevic had a shot on goal in the 27
' minute, but Bethel's Marco Taaffe (0-1-0) made one of his two saves in the half. The Wildcats' Leonardo Ferreira hit a post in the 26' minute and Patriot goalkeeper
Clement May (1-0-1) made three saves in the first 45' minutes of play.
Bethel struck first in the second half as Pascal Mohungsi dribbled into the right side of the box and shot into the lower right corner of the net. The Patriots trailed 1-0 until van der Made tied the match at 1-1 in the 75
' minute. Milivojevic played a free kick into the box that defender
Nemanja Jovanovic directed to van der Made, who finished into the lower left corner of the net.
Neither team scored during the remainder of regulation as the match went to overtime tied 1-1.
The Patriots trailed 23-13 in shots and 8-5 in shots on goal at the end of regulation, but UC outshot the Wildcats 3-1 in overtime, with all of their shots coming in a flurry of action that led to van der Made's game-winning goal in the 100' minute. Forward
Sergio Infantes had a shot on net with 29 seconds remaining in the first overtime that was punched back to Infantes by Taaffe. Infantes then had a shot blocked by a Wildcat defender and the ball bounced back to defender
Brandon Scherr. Scherr dribbled the ball towards the top of the box and crossed it to a streaking van der Made, who netted the decisive goal to complete the comeback win.
With his two goals, van der Made has scored all three Patriot goals this season. The multi-goal match is the first of his Patriot career.
May stopped seven shots to earn his first Patriot victory.
The win is the Patriots' first overtime win under third-year Head Coach
