Patriot Football Six Point Preview vs. Campbellsville

9/13/2018 2:41:00 PM

Williamsburg, KY – UC football continues to push ahead with their momentum as they defeated the then 24th-ranked Eagles of Faulkner University 44-34 in Williamsburg. Cumberlands now sits at 3-0 overall for the first time under Head Coach Matt Rhymer and is currently ranked #17 in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Now, UC enters a big game on Saturday as they take on Campbellsville University. Kickoff is set for 7 pm as UC will honor its 1988 Football team at halftime. Live video is available on the UC Sports Network here. With gameday just around the corner, here are six things to watch for in this weekend's contest.

  1. Control the recent historical trend.
Cumberlands has had the number of the Tigers in recent history. Although it is the third longest rivalry in the UC football program's history, much of the Patriots' success has come as of late. UC has won 13 of the last 14 meetings against the Tigers including six of the last seven in Williamsburg.

  1. Exploit the size differential.
UC's front line does have youth, but they also carry good size with them. Campbellsville's front line offensively is not as big as some of the other opposition that the Patriots have faced this season. Defensively, CU's size may not be great, but they may attempt to use speed in order to slow down the offense of Cumberlands.

  1. Keep Campbellsville guessing.
In recent history, UC has shown to have a prolific run game that has dominated teams into submission. Now, the Patriot offense may be the most balanced in the program's history. This is where Cumberlands must keep the Tigers on their toes.

  1. Cause mayhem on defense.
Campbellsville's offense has not been as prominent as years past thus far this season. Averaging just over 283 yards per game, the Tigers are only managing 9.5 points per game in their first two games. UC's defense has shown a lot of promise this year holding teams to just 20 points per contest over three games including one shutout.

  1. UC's secondary must stay strong.
The back line of defense for Cumberlands may be one of its most promising points. Patriot defensive backs have already picked off five passes in three games this year, helping aid to UC's +5 turnover margin. Another strong game by these guys will result in a positive ending for the Patriots.

  1. Cage the Tigers in their own territory.
Field position has been a big factor in all of UC's game this season. The kicking game has been top notch for the Patriots this season as opposition has averaged beginning their drives on the 24-yard line in Williamsburg over 26 attempted drives. On those drives in Williamsburg, opposing teams have punted ten times, turned the ball over seven times, had one punt blocked, given up a safety, and have started four of those drives inside the 15-yard line.
