Williamsburg, KY – (RV) University of the Cumberlands men's soccer scored twice in the second half, however it wasn't enough as they played Bryan College to a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex.
Cumberlands (3-1-2) and Bryan (1-3-2) played a scoreless first half, but the Patriots had some high-quality scoring opportunities. In the 11' minute,
Sergio Infantes, who would continue to create offensive chances throughout the match, had a shot on goal from inside the 18-yard box that was saved by Bryan's goalkeeper Alex Horton. Infantes would later have another shot from inside the box in the 25' minute, but Horton was once again equal to the task. UC held a 8-7 edge in shots in the first half, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
All of the scoring in the match would come in the second half. The Patriots kept trying to breakthrough offensively and
Filip Milivojevic would come through to put the Patriots up 1-0 in the 53' minute. After a foul on the Lions, Milivojevic took a free kick from outside the 18-yard box and placed it into the lower right corner of the net. However, the lead would not last as Bryan scored the equalizer in the 63' minute. Artur Dombrowski passed the ball from the right side of the 18-yard box across to Jonathan Ricketts. Ricketts dribbled to his left and fired a shot past the Patriots' goalkeeper
Clement May into the upper right corner of the net to make the score 1-1.
The Patriots had a scare in the 66' minute when the Lions' Charlie Clarke took a shot that got past May, but hit the crossbar and took a fortuitous bounce away from the net. Cumberlands retook the lead in the 70' minute on a well-executed corner kick.
Joel Drewery played the corner kick to the right side of the net where
Nicklas Nancke, who had subbed into the match just over two minutes earlier, volleyed the ball back into the lower left corner to put UC up 2-1.
Cumberlands held the 2-1 lead until the 87' minute when Ricketts struck for his second goal of the match — tying the score at 2-2 and leading to overtime. Brad Spooner crossed the ball into the left side of the box where Ricketts headed the ball back across towards the left side of the net. In full extension, May got his fingers on the ball but was unable to keep it out of the net.
The Patriots would have scoring opportunities in both overtime periods, but would be unable to score as the game would end in a 2-2 draw. In the first overtime period,
Marvin van der Made received a pass from Infantes right in front of the net. Van der Made attempted to shoot to the lower left corner, but Horton made the save for the Lions in the 96' minute. Then in the second overtime, Infantes had a chance from inside the 18-yard box, but his shot went high in the 103' minute. Infantes tried to connect with van der Made one more time with a cross into the box in the 107' minute, but the cross was just out of the reach of van der Made. Shots were 2-2 in the first overtime period and 5-2 Bryan in the second.
Bryan held a 24-21 edge in shots, but Cumberlands had a 11-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Milivojevic's goal was his first of the season, while Nancke netted his third. Nancke has scored in three of the Patriots' last four matches and is tied with Infantes for the team lead with nine points. Drewery tallied his team-leading fifth assist of the season in the match, Infantes led all players with five shots on goal in the match.
May stopped five shots for the Patriots, while Horton made nine saves for the Lions.
