Men’s Soccer Downs Georgetown 7-0 in MSC Opener

Georgetown, KY – Marvin van der Made scored UC's first hat trick in three years as University of the Cumberlands men's soccer routed Georgetown 7-0 in its Mid-South Conference opener at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday night.

Cumberlands (4-1-2, 1-0-0 MSC) controlled play from the beginning of the match — applying offensive pressure on Georgetown (6-5-0, 0-1-0 MSC). The pressure paid off when Van der Made scored in the 22' minute to make the score 1-0. Nemanja Jovanovic played the ball ahead to van der Made, who chipped a shot over the goalkeeper who had attempted to come out to challenge the shot. Under five minutes later, Van der Made would strike again to make the score 2-0. This time, he beat the defense, got into the box and drew a foul. Van der Made converted on the ensuing penalty kick in the 27' minute. One minute later, Nathan Seery scored his second collegiate goal in the 28' minute to make the score 3-0. Van der Made took a shot that was saved, but the goalkeeper was unable to control the rebound and Seery knocked the ball in the net. The Patriots kept attacking and van der Made completed his hat trick in the 45' minute to make the score 4-0 going into halftime. Joel Drewery passed the ball to van der Made, who got behind the defense and beat the goalkeeper with a low shot.

After halftime, the Patriots scored three more goals and cruised to a 7-0 victory as the final result was never in doubt. In the 56' minute, Nicklas Nancke took a shot that was saved, but Alejandro Gonzalez found the rebound and scored to increase the Patriot lead to 5-0. Less than five minutes later, Gonzalez scored again in the 60' minute and Nancke assisted on the play. Gonzalez got the ball in the box, made one touch and fired inside the near post. Nancke then got on the board for the Patriots' final goal in the 67' minute. Infantes took a shot that was saved, but Nancke kicked home the rebound.

Van der Made has scored a team-leading seven goals on the season. The hat trick was the first in the first half of a match for the Patriots since Jack Cousin accomplished the feat in a 16-0 win over Hiwassee College on September 25, 2015. Van der Made's hat trick is UC's first since that match. It is also UC's first MSC hat trick since Pedro Antonelli scored three times in a 4-1 win over Georgetown on October 9, 2013.

Cumberlands outshot Georgetown 30-8, including 21-2 in shots on goal.

Clement May (3-1-2) made two saves to record his second shutout of the season for the Patriots, while Landen LeDuke (0-1-0) stopped 14 shots for the Tigers.

The Patriots return to action against ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 2 at the UC Lacrosse/Soccer Complex. Live stats are available here.
