Fast Start not Enough as Patriots Fall to 18th-Ranked Tigers

Williamsburg, KY – The UC volleyball team took the first set, however it wasn't enough as they fell to 18th-ranked Georgetown 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 19-25, 11-25) Tuesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. With the win the Tigers improve to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the MSC, while the Patriots fall to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The two teams traded points to start the match as the first set saw three lead changes and six ties in the first 12 points.  A Lynsey Short kill sparked a 7-1 run for the Patriots, which also included a block and a kill from Leah Crist, to give UC a 13-7 advantage. Cumberlands used a 3-1 run to extend their lead to 16-8, before Georgetown went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 18-14.  Back-to-back kills by Lily Chapman and Ashley Sobocinski gave the Patriots a 20-14 advantage.  Georgetown score six unanswered points to even the score at 20-20.  The score was also tied 21-21, 22-22, and 23-23, before Mackenzie Koch notch a kill to give the Patriots the set 25-23 and the 1-0 lead.

Georgetown jumped out to a 5-3 in the second set, before Short tallied a kill and a pair of assists to give the Patriots a 6-5 lead.  The Tigers retook the lead at 12-9 before a Koch kill paired with a Georgetown error cut the deficit to 11-12.  Georgetown used and 11-6 run to win the set 25-20 and even the score at 1-1.

The Tigers used a 9-3 run in the third set and a 6-1 run and an 11-0 run in the fourth set to earn the 3-1 win.

Routliffe led the way for the Patriots finishing with 21 digs, while Sobocinski tallied 13 kills and ten digs for her fourth double-double of the season.  Koch also notched a team-high 13 kills.  Short dished out 35 assists, 11 digs, and four kills, while Anna Zuniga finished with 13 digs. 

The Patriots will return to action Friday, September 21, when they travel to Campbellsville, KY to take on (RV) Tigers at 7 p.m.  Live video will be available here, while live stats will be available here.
