Williamsburg, KY – The UC volleyball team extended their winning streak to three as they defeated Fisk 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 26-24), Thursday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. With the win the Patriots improve to 7-4, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-11.
Patriots used a pair of
Ashley Sobocinski kills to jump out to a 6-3 lead in the first set. Fisk responded with a 6-3 run, before the Patriots scored six straight points to take a 15-9 lead. Cumberlands extended their lead to 21-13, before the Bulldogs got a kill from Cormysia Island to cut it to 21-14. From that point UC used a pair of kills from
Mackenzie Koch and a kill from
Lily Chapman to close out the set 25-17 and give Cumberlands a 1-0 lead.
In the second set, Fisk jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead however the Patriots responded quickly with eight unanswered points, including a pair of kills from
Megan Jackson and Sobocinski to 9-2. The Bulldog cut the lead to 11-6 before UC went on a 6-1 run, which included a pair of service aces from
Lynsey Short to extend the lead to 17-7. Koch and
Maddie Kosky posted back-to-back kills to extend the lead to 19-8. The Bulldogs used a 7-4 run to cut the lead to 23-15 before the Patriots scored twice to take the set 25-15 and extend their lead to 2-0.
Fisked jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the third set. The Patriots rallied behind a trio of Jackson kills to take a 6-5 lead. The two teams traded points several times before the Bulldogs went on an 8-2 run to take an 18-11 lead. Cumberlands continued to battle notching eight of the next ten points to cut the deficit to one, 20-19. Fisk extended their lead to 23-19, however UC recorded seven of the eight points to take the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.
Jackson led the way with 11 kills, posting at least ten kills in each of the last three games. Short dished out 32 assists and six digs. She has averaged 11.5 assists per set over the course of the win streak. Routliffe posted a team-high nine digs, while Short and
Anna Zuniga each tallied a pair of service aces.
The Patriots will return to action Saturday, September 8, when they travel to Grayson, KY for a tri-match. UC will face Glenville State at 1 p.m. before playing Kentucky Christian at 3 p.m.
