Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots ladies took sixth-ranked Campbellsville to their limit in Saturday's contest, holding a 33-24 lead at the break over the Tigers. A trio of sharpshooters from Campbellsville would combine for 67 of their 75 points as the Tigers would use a big third quarter rally along with a sharp fourth quarter to defeat UC 75-68. The loss moves the Patriots to 12-8 (0-5 MSC) on the year.
A back and forth battle would ensue from the tip with both teams trading leads for nearly the first seven minutes of play. UC would take an 11-10 lead with 3:10 to go in the frame and lead 16-14 after ten minutes gone. Never trailing in the second quarter, the Patriots would continue to inch their way out front of the Tigers. Cumberlands would eventually extend the lead to nine at the halftime break with the score 33-24.
The third quarter saw a quick start for CU, who went on a 15-4 run to take a 39-37 lead midway through the frame. The Patriots answered with a 7-0 run of their own to take the lead back at 45-39 with four to play in the third. Campbellsville would cut into the lead again as they would trail 49-46 entering the final ten minutes of play. In the fourth, there would be nine different lead changes between the two teams, but a Tigers' 15-7 run in the final five minutes of the game would push them out front for good as they would escape Williamsburg with the seven point win over the Patriots.
Four Patriots would score in double figures led by
Hannah Lawson with 13 points to go with four assists and two rebounds.
Jasmine Rhodes added 12 points off the bench with seven rebounds and a steal.
Shayla Simpson notched her second double-double of the year with 11 points and 13 rebounds to go with seven assists and two blocks.
Kayla Bruner also chipped in 11 points before fouling out of the game. The Patriots shot 48.4% from the field, but just 33.3% (6-18) from deep and 25% (2-8) from the charity stripe.
Campbellsville was led by three double figure scorers in the form of Madison Stewart (29), Madison Keiser (22, 6-11 3 PT), and Madison Faulkner (16). The Tigers ended the night shooting 35.6% from the floor and 30.4% from beyond the arc. The Tigers also shot just 51.6% from the free throw line, but did go 16-31, making a big impact on the game.
UC returns to action on Thursday, January 24
th as they travel to Columbia, Kentucky to take on the Blue Raiders of Lindsey Wilson College. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm eastern time.
