Patriots Beat Down Buccaneers for Back-to-Back Wins in Virgin Islands

St. Croix, Virgin Islands – The Patriot Women's Basketball team took to the floor for the second consecutive night to take on the Buccaneers of the University of the Virgin Islands. Again, UC was able to jump out to a sizeable lead before pulling away late for the 59-38 victory. The win moves the Patriots to 2-0 on the early season while also giving Head Coach Rick Reeves his 499th career victory.

The Patriots would open up a five-point lead in the first quarter 18-13 before outscoring the Bucs 13-2 in the following ten minutes to take a 31-15 lead into halftime. The third quarter saw both teams trade baskets back and forth, but UC would pull away a bit further away in the fourth 17-13 to come away with the 59-38 win.

Newcomer Silvia Veloso went 5-9 from the field for 13 points to go with four steals, three rebounds, and a pair of assists. Vilma Covane chipped in nine points with five rebounds while sister Carla Covane added eight points and eight rebounds. Hannah Lawson also pitched in eight points.

Cumberlands shot 30.6% from the field as well as 70.8% from the free throw line. The Patriots outrebounded the Buccaneers 50-41. UC also tallied 16 steals and forced 23 turnovers, scoring 17 points off those turnovers. The Bucs were led by Jadyn Rice with 16 points.

UC returns to the floor in two weeks on Friday, October 25th in the APW Classic in Pikeville, Kentucky where they will take on Florida Memorial University. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
