Williamsburg, KY – Rookie attacker Luis Jara Encina led the Patriots to victory, upsetting the Campbellsville Tigers 1-0 in double-overtime. Jara and company move to 3-1 in Mid-South Conference action ahead of their weekend road trip.
The bench-clearing celebration was eight years in the making, as the Patriots topple the Tigers for the first time since 2011. The Patriots previously went 1-9 with the Tigers in their last 10 meetings.
Late in the game, a long pass upfield was headed on into the attacking third by tall-man
Marvin van der Made. In a toss-up for the ball, Jara found himself with only the keeper to beat, slipping the ball into the lower right corner ensuing the walk-off win.
Jara and
Sergio Infantes Castell led the team with five shots apiece of the Patriots 21 taken in the over 100-minute game. Marking two of the six shots on goal, Jara was the sole Patriot to convert his offensive chance, coming up with his first collegiate game-winner and fourth goal of the season.
Nemanja Jovanovic used his height as an advantage, offering three headed shot attempts which were cleared away.
Alejandro Gonzalez,
Marco Muca and
Milan Stojanovic follow with two shots apiece, while
Smith Pepper and
Kelshall Alexander Jr. each came away from the night with one.
In addition to Jara's pair of shots on goal, Jovanovic, Gonzalez, Stojanovic and Muca each chalked one on frame.
The Tigers notched six shots of 19 on frame, giving starting keeper
Akililu Zambataro more saves on the season to amount to 34. The Patriots defense allowed four shots on goal in the first half, two in the second, and shut them down in overtime.
Coming from a corner, the Tigers lone "goal" made in regulation was negated by an offside call in the box, keeping the scoreboard clean.
The Patriots matched up well against the 25th-ranked Tigers, forcing overtime on home field after regulation. Coach
Chris LeFevre and squad last saw a 1-1 draw against Tennessee Wesleyan in their last overtime affair in September.
The Patriots travel twice more before returning home against Pikeville in their final home contest of the season. Marching to Lebanon, TN, the Patriots look to continue their winning streak against the Phoenix on Sunday, October 20.
