Men's Soccer Falls Short in Rivalry Match With Cumberland

Lebanon, TN – Patriots unable to keep tempo with the Cumberland Phoenix, falling in a 3-1 battle on the road. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Patriots, who now sit 7-5-1 on the year and 3-2 in MSC action.

Luis Jara Encina scored the equalizer in the 38th minute of the contest, getting the cross near the left post from the foot of Alejandro Gonzalez. The rookie chalked his fifth goal of the season with the score, netting a ball in his second-straight game after the game-winner against Campbellsville earlier this week.

Marvin van der Made led the team in shots taken, putting five toward goal. The senior forward did not have any on goal, the closest coming off the crossbar in the 87th minute.

Jara put three of his four shots taken on goal, converting one into a score in the Patriots favor. Milan Stojanovic, Sergio Infantes Castell, Gonzalez, Liam Healey and Miguel Reis each tallied one shot taken with Reis' and Infantes' coming up saved.

The Phoenix painted the scoreboard first with an early goal, striking in the ninth minute. A quick hitter in the box gave the home team the advantage, sliding the ball onto the lower left corner past UC keeper Akililu Zambataro.

In the second half, the Phoenix rallied back to put two goals on the Patriots in a matter of minutes. Joel Drewery came in for a team save but the ricochet resulted in CU's second goal of the evening. With nine minutes remaining, a foul in the box paved way to another goal for the home team, chipped into the upper right past Zambataro.

Zambataro came away with the loss, his fourth of the season. In the game, the freshman tallied five saves on eight shots on goal. Zambataro allowed the most goals scored since the loss to West Virginia Tech earlier this season.

The Patriots travel for the second-straight MSC match, this time to Lindsey Wilson. Coach Chris LeFevre and squad face-off against the Blue Raiders at 6 PM on October 26.
