Bowling Green, KY – Two more Mid-South Players of the Week go to women's soccer, as
Naira Lopez and
Nicole Panis pick up the offensive and defensive awards respectively, announced by the conference office on Monday.
Lopez notched two goals and an assist over the week, putting one on the board against the #24 Campbellsville Tigers and #19 Cumberland Phoenix. Panis, meanwhile, earned the honors after holding both ranked opponents to a goal each, collecting four saves on 19 shots faced.
After heading into halftime with both teams tied at zero, Lopez scored the opening goal against the Tigers, chipping in the shot over the opposing keeper from Anihoa Camara. Thirty minutes later, the freshman midfielder found
Alba Lorca in a double-pass transition goal in front of the box, putting the Patriots ahead 3-0.
Against the Phoenix, it took Lopez 22 seconds to give the Patriots another win over a ranked opponent in the same week. The rookie netted the golden-goal game-winner early in overtime, getting the assist from Lauren Navajas.
Lopez registered her first collegiate game-winner on Sunday against the Phoenix. Meanwhile, she has scored in three straight games, tallying four over the stretch.
After holding the Tigers to six shots allowed with only one on goal, Panis went on to collect four saves against the Phoenix. The keeper now has 36 on the season.
Panis continues to shine at a national level, ranking as the number-five goalie in the NAIA in terms of goals allowed average. The rookie has allowed five goals in over 1,000 minutes of work for a 0.43 average.
With 10 wins on the year, Panis proves to be the winningest first-year keeper since Stephanie Reid in 2007 (15-4).
Lopez claimed the weekly honor in good company, following
Amy Anderson and
Shara Randez who earned the award in the first two weeks of the season respectively. Panis took the recognition for the second-straight week, third time of the season. This is the second time this year the Patriots swept the MSC Players of the Week awards, the first being week one.
The Patriots match up with Lindsey Wilson on Saturday on the road. The fifth-ranked Blue Raiders host the UC soccer teams with kick-off at 6 PM for the men and 8 PM for the women.
