Offensive Struggles Plagues Patriots in 3-0 Lost to Georgetown

Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands volleyball team struggled to find a rhythm on offense as they fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-18) to Georgetown Tuesday night at the UC Volleyball Gym. With the win Georgetown improves to 16-10 overall and 8-3 in conference play, while the Patriots move to 13-11 overall and 4-8 against the MSC.

Savannah Schwarz continued to make the most out of her opportunities recording 23 assists and a career-high 19 digs in her first collegiate start.  Schwarz dug ten of her game-high 19 digs in the first set.  Lily Chapman led the Patriots with 12 kills, making it the eighth time this season that the sophomore tallied at least ten kills in a match.

The Patriots found themselves in an 8-4 hole to start the first set. UC rallied as Schwarz connected with Ashley Sobocinski, Lily Chapman, and Mackenzie Koch for three straight kills to cut the deficit to 8-7.  Three points later Schwarz teamed with Leah Crist for a block to even the score at 9-9.  Georgetown went on a 12-5 run to take a 21-15 lead.  After both teams added a pair of points a Chapman kill sparked a 5-1 run to bring the Patriots within two, but Georgetown closed out the set 25-22 to take a 1-0 lead.

Georgetown tallied a pair of four-point runs coupled with a trio of three-point runs to take the second set 25-16 and extend their lead to 2-0. The Patriots rallied in third set as Lexi Lester notched a pair of aces to put UC in front 4-2. Cumberlands added a three-point run, highlight by a Sobocinski kill to remain in front 7-4.  Chapman scored the Patriots next four points to give UC an 11-9 advantage.  A couple points later, Cumberlands added a kill by Crist to take a 13-12 lead, however the Tigers went on a 9-1 run to take a 21-14 lead.  Mackenzie Koch added a kill late, while Rachel Scott notched an ace but it wasn't enough as Georgetown held on to take the set 25-18 and the 3-0 win.
