Williamsburg, KY – Patriots begin a new streak, coming away with a 5-1 victory over Georgetown College on Wednesday night. Offensive efforts by
Marvin van der Made helped Cumberlands turn the tide in their favor to sit 5-4-1 on the year.
Five Patriots walked off the field under the lights, propelling the team to their first Mid-South Conference win of the year, now 1-1 in MSC action. Included in the tally,
Alejandro Gonzalez and
Nathan Seery each tack on their first goals of the 2019 campaign.
Van der Made opened his stellar night by tacking on the goal to pad the Patriots 2-0 over the Tigers in the 16th minute. The senior smoothly placed his second penalty kick attempt of the season perfectly into the bottom left corner. Setting up the one-on-one opportunity,
Milan Stojanovic hit the turf hard to draw the foul in the box.
The man from The Netherlands went on to complete his night with two assists, coming on the third and fifth goals. Van der Made scored his on one of his two shots on goal of the night, tallying five total shots attempted. He continues to lead his Patriots crew in points this season, now with 21.
Beginning action with the early goal, Luis Jara scored his third ball of the season in the top half of the box. Converting the corner kick opportunity, the double-assist credits went to
Joel Drewery and
Nahshon Rullow for the initial cross and header to the top of the box in the 11th minute of competition.
The Patriots extended their lead quickly after halftime, who went into the break with the 2-0 cushion over the Tigers. Only 30 seconds into the half, Gonzalez collected his first goal of the year. The veteran star used his speed to break past defenders, got the touch from van der Made and netted the left-footed lace past the post.
Coming off the bench,
Sergio Infantes Castell also maneuvers efficiently around a pair of defenders to notch the fourth goal of the night in the Patriots favor. The junior yielded plenty of power behind the shot toward the lower left corner, sending it through the keeper's arms and legs and into the back of the net.
Topping off the night, Seery managed to score his first goal of his sophomore campaign against the weakened Tigers defense, the third of his Patriots career. Van der Made's shot was saved but Seery stepped in on the rebound to tap the ball toward the right post, ricocheting in and commencing the cheers on the bench.
Akililu Zambataro saw his eighth start in net of his rookie campaign, coming away with his fourth win. The keeper led his team to only two shots on goal allowed of the 13 looked in from around the field. The Defensive backs stood their ground to scope out any potential opportunities and chase away the Tigers.
Offensively, the Patriots outpaced the Tigers with five goals made, 15 shots on goal, and 25 total shots attempted. The Patriots also picked up nine corner kick opportunities, converting one early on and opening the flood gates. In the first half the home team took 16 shots, making two, meanwhile netting three of nine in the second half of action.
The Tigers took two shots on goal in the affair, one resulting in a score in the final seconds of the match. Despite the late goal, the Tigers move to 10-2 on the year, 1-2 in MSC play.
The Patriots felt a wave of emotion after the win, collecting the first victory tally in a month of action. The 5-1 decision also came as their largest margin of victory since the Patriots 5-0 rout against the Concordia (MI) Cardinals on the road.
Competing once again on home turf, the Patriots look to face Thomas More University at the end of the week. The match against the Saints – who are 4-6 on the year, 0-3 to open MSC play – is slated to begin at roughly 7:30 PM on October 12 following the women's game.
