Williamsburg, KY – Now 7-0 on the year and 4-0 in MSC Bluegrass Division play, the Patriot football team enters the back end of the schedule looking to keep their momentum going. With three games remaining in the regular season, Cumberlands aims to finish out strong, keeping their high national ranking and stay a hopeful to host in the NAIA Football Championship Series. This week, the Patriots take a trip north to face the Tigers of Georgetown College who look to play the role of spoiler this week. Kickoff is set for 1:30 PM Saturday afternoon. With game day just around the corner, here are six things to watch for in this weekend's contest.
- Erase the recent historical trend.
Cumberlands has not had the best history with the Tigers when it comes to win-loss record. None of that matters now though. Very few of the players on this team were even at UC the last time these two teams met, which was a 31-7 loss to the Tigers in November of 2016. Simply, it's time to even things up.
- Ground their air attack as early as possible.
In the past, the Tigers have been a much more balanced attacking offense, trending about 65-35 passing to rushing. In the words of ESPN great Lee Corso, "Not so fast my friend!" This season, the Tigers have only accumulated 402 yards rushing in seven contests.
- Stay poised under the pressure.
Georgetown Defensive Coordinator Shan Housekeeper has given the Patriots some fits in recent years since taking over as DC in 2010. He will send multiple looks at the Patriot offense, including dropping as many as seven back into the secondary or sending as many as eight after the backfield. If you are the Patriots, keep your head up and be prepared for anything.
- Cause mayhem on defense.
With Georgetown currently looking much ore one-dimensional on the offensive side of the ball, it is time to send a plethora of stunts and different zones at two youthful quarterbacks. The pair averages just 22 yards per game on the ground while throwing at least one interception per contest. Keep them on their toes and it makes the game much more interesting.
- The front line will win this game for one team.
Offensively, the Patriots front line has been phenomenal, and if they stay this way, it will be a successful day for UC. Defensively, both waves of defensive lines have been outstanding as they have anchored downed and given the Patriots a huge platform to start from each and every play. Both have been crucial in your success. This week, you need them now like no other.
- Continue to push big play buttons with your defense and special teams packages.
For three straight weeks, UC has come up big either on defense or special teams.
Brad Montgomery's punt block and score was big. A coffin cornered punt pinning Bethel on their one yard line before a strip, scoop, and score by
Kumi Sarpong, Jr. was huge. Look to make it happen once again.
