Williamsburg, KY – The UC Patriot Women's Basketball team finally had a chance to unveil their team to their home fans on Friday morning as they hosted Montreat College. They did so in front of a crowd of nearly 1,300 elementary school students plus local fans as well as Coach Rick Reeves also received recognition pre-game for his 500th career victory. It was a day filled with good news as UC would continue their winning ways to begin the season, moving to 5-0 overall with a 70-48 over the Cavaliers.
Although the Patriots would struggle over the entirety of the game from beyond the arc (2-13), they would get the job done in the paint as well as from the charity stripe. The first quarter was a very good indicator of that. After allowing two free throws nearly a minute into the first, UC would go on a 20-4 run to take a 20-6 lead into the second quarter. Nearly the first three minutes would go quietly in the second period, but when scoring began it was in major favor of the Patriots once again. UC would outscore the Cavaliers 16-9 in the frame to carry a 36-15 lead into halftime.
The bench of the Patriots saw a lot of playing time in the second half while others would help pitching in to keep the lead where it was. UC would edge out the Cavaliers in the third while going even keel in the fourth as the Patriots earned the 22-point victory over Montreat to stay undefeated on the early season.
Carla Covane would lead the way for the Patriots with 14 points and eight rebounds. Rebecca Lewter added 11 points off the bench going 5-6 from the floor. Reagon Begole chipped in nine points as well to go with five assists, three rebounds, and three steals.
Montreat's Zharia Brown led her team with a double-double, notching 12 points and 14 rebounds.
UC was outrebounded in the game 38-26, but the Patriots forced 33 turnovers in the game, scoring 32 points off those turnovers. The Patriots also capitalized in the paint, scoring 44 points down low and 15 off second chances.
The Patriots return to action on Wednesday, November 6th as they travel to Wilmore, Kentucky to take on the Eagles of Asbury University. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
