Wilmore, KY – Although the UC Women's Basketball team would jump out to a double-digit lead at the break on the road Wednesday against Asbury University, a plethora of fouls and free throws would send the Patriots to their first loss of the season. The Eagles would use overtime, a multitude of converted free throws, and forced turnovers to overtake Cumberlands 97-96, sending UC to 5-1 overall on the year.
Asbury would hold on to a slim four-point lead after the first quarter of play, which saw the Eagles get to the free throw line nine times, sinking eight of those for a 26-22 lead after ten minutes of play. The Patriots though would have a second quarter that all teams love to have. UC would go on a 17-3 scoring run while holding Asbury to 1-16 from the field to overtake the Eagles and go to the locker room with a 39-29 lead at the half.
The second half would see the Patriots plagued with foul trouble and turnovers which kept the Eagles in the contest. Cutting the lead to just two after the third quarter of play, Asbury would take a lead late in the fourth 83-77. Cumberlands would come up with a big three pointer from Megan Morton along with a basket and two free throws from Hannah Lawson to send the game to overtime deadlocked at 84-84.
During the five extra minutes of play, UC would have to come from behind yet again, which they did to take a lead late in the period. A foul with just seconds on the clock though would send the Eagles to the line, where leading scorer Jaclynn Ruble would sink both from the charity stripe, to give Asbury the 97-96 win in overtime.
Four Patriots would score in double figures led by Silvia Veloso with 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Hannah Lawson added 13 points with five assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Addison Wilson chipped in 11 points off the bench while Morton also aided with ten points, four assists, and three rebounds.
UC would outrebound the Eagles 50-41 in the contest but would commit 38 turnovers in the loss. Asbury would take advantage of the turnovers, scoring 26 points off those while putting 17 points on the board on second chance opportunities. Ruble led her Eagles on the night with 27 points, five rebounds, and five steals, but did commit 11 turnovers in the game.
UC returns to action at home on Saturday, November 9th as they host the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners for a game. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 PM.
