Box Score Georgetown, KY – The UC Football program took to the road on Saturday looking to stay perfect yet again as they would face the Tigers of Georgetown College. History has not been in the favor of the Patriots when it comes to traveling to Toyota Stadium where UC had won just twice in their last 14 trips. Cumberlands would use a stiff defensive game plan as well as using more of their bread-and-butter offense to give the Patriots a 14-7 win over the Tigers, their first win in Georgetown since 1996.
The Patriots would kick it away to the Tigers to start off the contest. Both teams would struggle to move the ball as the defenses would hold both teams scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play. The second quarter continued to play out the same way until the Patriots would force a turnover on downs to take over on the UC 27-yard line. There, Cumberlands would put together an 11-play drive that saw a healthy dose of
Martize Smith. He would carry the ball nine times on the drive capping it off with a two-yard punch into the end zone for the first score of the game. The extra point by
Nick Amaya was good, giving UC the 7-0 lead with just over five minutes left in the half.
UC's defense would hold Georgetown again to get the ball with under two minutes to play. After driving down to the GC 17-yard line, UC would get a chance at a field goal as time expires, but Amaya's kick would sail wide right to send the Patriots into the locker room at half up 7-0.
Cumberlands would open the half with a great drive, milking nearly seven minutes off the clock before being forced to attempt a 34-yard field goal. Amaya would again see his kick push wide right, keeping it 7-0 Patriots. The Patriots would force another turnover on downs as UC would take over near midfield. There, Robbins would take a quarterback keeper 32 yards to put the ball in Georgetown territory. Later in the drive, Josiah would find
Darius Young for the 17-yard score. Amaya's extra point was good, giving the Patriots a 14-0 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Georgetown would finally find a bit of offense in the fourth as they were faced with another fourth down. This time, the Tigers would successfully convert as JJ Ogbogu would get behind the secondary as Brandon Burgess would hit his target for a 38-yard touchdown. The point after was good, making it 14-7 Patriots. After the Patriots go three-and-out, the UC defense would come up big yet again. This time on fourth and five at midfield, Cumberlands would force an incompletion to get the turnover on downs for the third time in the game. The Patriots' offense picked up the first down they needed as GC would run out of timeouts, giving UC the 14-7 win.
Robbins finished the day 10-15 through the air for 109 yards and a score. He added 50 yards on the ground on 14 carries. Smith was the work horse for UC with 23 carries for a career-high 148 yards and a touchdown.
Darius Young was the main pass catcher for the Patriots, hauling in four passes for 31 yards and a score.
Defensively, it was a full body of work that led to the victory as UC was able to hold Georgetown to just 251 yards and just seven points on the game, both below what Cumberlands has given up this season. Together, they accumulated four sacks, five and a half tackles for loss, and a pass breakup. The big credit is their bend-not-break mentality as they held the Tigers to 2-12 on third downs and 1-4 on fourth downs.
Tyler Pendleton led the way with seven tackles and a half tackle for loss.
Jamar Roberts and Kumi Sarpong each had four tackles. Sarpong also added a sack and a tackle for loss.
The Patriots round out their regular season road schedule next Saturday, November 9
th as they travel north to take on new MSC Bluegrass Division member Thomas More University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
