Williamsburg, KY – UC Women's Basketball put together a solid game plan and executed well on Thursday night as the Patriots would snap an 11-game skid, defeating the Running Eagles of Life University by a score of 75-64. The win moves UC to 13-14 on the year and also gives Cumberlands their first win in Mid-South Conference play this season.
In the first quarter, Life and Cumberlands would trade baskets for the first four minutes of the contest. Tied at 7-7, UC's
Rebecca Lewter would sink a two that would give the Patriots the lead for good. A 14-7 run to finish out the first gave the Patriots a 21-14 lead after one quarter of play. Cumberlands would pull away a bit more in the second as they would hold a ten point lead at the half by a score of 33-23.
In the third, Cumberlands would extend their lead to as much as 16, but Life would cut back into the lead, down to as much as seven at 50-43. UC would hold a nine point edge with the score 54-45 with ten minutes to play. Although the Eagles would get the game back to just a six point margin with three and a half minutes to play, Cumberlands would grind to push the lead back to double figures, winning the contest by 11.
Three Patriots would garner double figures, led by
Megan Morton who tallied her second double-double of the season with 22 points and ten rebounds.
Shayla Simpson chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds, and five steals off the bench while
Callia Cropp added 14 points, three rebounds, and two assists in the win.
Cumberlands shot just shy of 45% in the game while going 25-35 from the free throw line in the victory. UC saw 37 points contributed from the bench while tallying 24 points in the paint in the game. The Patriots also outrebounded Life 39-33 in the win.
Life's Kiana Glenn led her team with 14 points off the bench while Maeisha Teasley added 11 points as a reserve. The Running Eagles shot 36.5% from the floor, but just 2-16 from beyond the arc including 1-9 in the final 20 minutes of play.
The Patriots return to action on Saturday, February 16
th in non-conference play as they host the Cougars of Carver College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
