Beverly Hills, MI – The third-ranked UC women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early lead and rallied late netting five of the final six goals to defeat fourth-ranked Lawrence Tech 13-11 Friday night at DCDS Fieldhouse. With the win the Patriots improve to 2-0 on the year, while the Blue Devils drop to 0-1.
It was a defensive battle right from the start as both goalies made saves to keep the game scoreless through the first seven minutes of action. UC broke the scoreless tie as
Samantha Tullar converted a free position attempt at the 21:32 mark.
Amanda Phillips and Tullar added back-to-back goals, while
Emily Crump made three straight saves to extend the lead to 3-0 midway through the first half. After the Blue Devils cut the lead to 3-1, Tullar responded with an unassisted goal for her second hat trick in as many games extending UC's lead to 4-1. Lawrence Tech ended the first half with three unanswered goals to even the score 4-4 at halftime.
Lawrence Tech netted three straight goals to start the second half and take a 7-4 lead with 21:26 remaining. UC answered 24 seconds later as
Emily Heim netted a free position goal to cut the deficit to 7-5. Tullar won the ensuing draw control, raced up field and put a well-placed shot past the goalie to bring Cumberlands within one. Ashley Sherry recorded a goal for Lawrence Tech before Heim connected with
Kelsey Fearing for her first goal of the season to cut the deficit to 8-7 with 16:42 remaining. After the two teams traded goals twice
Tristyn Hudson netted the equalizer to even the score 10-10 with 8:00 remaining. From that point
Jaclyn Berry, the reigning AAC Freshman of the Year, took over netting two pair of goals to put UC in front 12-10 with 3:49 left. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 13-12 however
Katie Brewer found Berry in front of the cage for a goal to close out the game 13-11.
Tullar led the way for Cumberlands with a game-high five goals and six draw controls. Fearing added a goal while scooping a career-high four draw controls and three ground balls. Berry notched her second hat trick of the season, while Heim chipped in a goal and an assist.
Emily Crump recorded 11 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season.
UC returns to action Friday, February 22, as they travel to Ottawa, Kansas for the start of a three-game road swing. Cumberlands will face the Braves, before taking on Benedictine and Missouri Valley on the weekend.
