Women’s Lacrosse Falls in Battle of Ranked Teams

Box Score Atchison, KS – Facing their third straight opponent that is either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA top ten poll, the third-ranked UC women's lacrosse team could rebound from an early deficit as they fell to eighth-ranked Benedictine 16-12. With the win the Ravens improve to 2-0, while the Patriots move to 3-1 on the season.

Benedictine struck first scoring the first four goals to give the Ravens a 4-0 lead with 25:49 remaining in the first half.  UC cut the deficit to 4-1 as Emily Heim connected with Jacyln Berry for goal less than a minute later.  The Ravens went on an 8-1 run, over a 17 minute span, to give Benedictine a 12-2 advantage.   Cumberlands battled back as Berry found Samantha Tullar for a goal.  Three minutes later, Tullar converted a free position attempt into a goal cutting the deficit to 12-4 at halftime.

The second half started the same way as the Ravens notched back-to-back goals to extend their lead to 14-4 two minutes in.  Heim connected with Berry for the third time in the game, before Tullar tallied an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 14-6 with 21:18 left.  After Benedictine added a goal, Amanda Phillips put a well-placed shot past the goalie to spark a 4-0 Patriot run and cut the deficit to 15-10 with 7:33 remaining.  Three minutes later, Trinity Brown found Tullar cutting towards the cage for a goal as Berry netted an unassisted goal cut the deficit 16-12 with 3:42 remaining.  The Patriots tried to cut into the lead more however Taryn St. Louis made two of seven saves for the 16-12 final.

Tullar led the way for the Patriots with six goals and an assist, while Berry added five points.  Heim dished out three assists and scooped four draw controls as Phillips chipped in a pair of points.  Emily Crump finished with a season-high 14 saves and three ground balls in the contest. 

UC returns to action Monday, February 25, as they wrap up their three-game road trip against Missouri Valley in Marshall, MO. The game is slated for 2 p.m.
