Emerson, GA – The UC Baseball Patriots finished out a solid weekend of work on Sunday at Lake Point Sports Complex as they rounded out a four-game series with the Rams of Bluefield College. Two more solid pitching performances from UC combined with the use of the long ball numerous times would spell success for Cumberlands, winning both games today by scores of 7-2. The pair of victories pushes the Patriots' winning streak to 11 games and moving their season record to 11-1.
Nathan Geissler would go to the mound for game one and again give a great start for the Patriots. Going the distance for his first complete game of the season, Geissler allowed just two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out six in the win. After two scoreless innings of play,
Bryan Benz would erase the blank in the runs column with a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the third inning. This solo shot was his second of the year, making it 1-0 Patriots. This home run also moves Benz into second place all-time in career home runs.
The Rams would get their offense going in the fourth. Stringing together four singles in the inning, two runs would cross the plate to give them a 2-1 lead with one down. Geissler would then induce a 6-4-3 double play to end the threat. In the bottom of the fifth, UC would put the long ball to use. With two down and two on via walks,
Kevin Rolon would come up big from the nine spot in the order, smashing a three-run home run over the left field wall for his first home run of the season and giving UC a 4-2 advantage. Teammate
Pedro Nazario also joined in on the fun with a solo shot of his own, his third of the year, to extend the lead to 5-2.
In the sixth,
Raudy Martinez would lead the inning off with a double. After two Patriots would surrender outs,
J.C. Santos put an exclamation mark on the game, sending a missile over the right field wall for a two-run home run, his second of the season, to give UC it's 7-2 winning score in game one.
As the Patriots looked to sweep the four-game set with the Rams, UC turned to
Tyler Morris to toe the rubber. Morris avenged his previous start on the season by getting his first win on the year, hurling five innings allowing two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven.
Hampton Clark would come in as Morris worked himself into a jam in the sixth, but would come up big in his own right to record the save. Clark finished the day with two innings allowing no runs, hits, or walks while fanning five in the game.
Bluefield would begin the game's scoring with a two run home run from Ozzie Millet in the first inning. It was the only runs of the game though for the Rams as UC's pitching duo would shut down Bluefield the rest of the contest.
In the bottom of the first, three singles and a walk would bring home one run for UC as
Jose Rojas would tally a RBI single to cut the lead in half at 2-1. The Patriots' offense would really break open in the bottom of the third. Although only notching two hits in the frame, both produced runs for UC. A double deep of the wall in left-center from
Bryan Leef would drive in two while Rolon would hit his second home run of the day, this time a two-run shot over the batter's eye in straight away center.
Robbie Stroub added a sacrifice fly in the frame as well, pushing five runs across in the inning to make it 6-2 Patriots.
The final bit off offense from the Patriots would come in the bottom of the fifth inning. Again, Cumberlands would jump on the Rams' pitching early as Leef would smash the first pitch of the fifth deep to left for a solo home run, his second of the year, to make it 7-2 Patriots, the eventual final score.
UC will now return to the friendly confines of Doyle Buhl Stadium on Tuesday, February 26
th as they host the Eagles of Asbury University for a nine-inning contest. First pitch is set for 4 pm. Live video and stats will be available on the UC Sports Network.
