Williamsburg, KY – Patriot baseball is off to a fantastic start in 2019 and today was no different as they returned to Doyle Buhl Stadium to take on the Eagles of Asbury University. Getting started early offensively and never looking back, the Patriots would jump out and defeat Asbury 13-1 in seven innings, earning the run rule victory. The win extends Cumberlands' winning streak to 12 and improves the Patriots to 12-1 overall.
Starting pitcher
Adrian Comas would allow a hit and a walk in the opening inning but would settle down to leave both stranded and the Eagles scoreless. UC of the other hand would not go down quietly in the first. Back-to-back doubles by
Pedro Nazario and
Orley Arellano would begin the inning, bringing home a run to make it 1-0. After a walk to
Raudy Martinez and a hit-by-pitch to
Bryan Leef,
Robbie Stroub would be hit with a two-out pitch to bring in a second run of the inning, leaving the bags full.
Kevin Rolon would step up and drive in a pair on a single over the head of the shortstop, extending the lead to 4-0. Nine-hole hitter
Marquis Orozco would finish out the scoring in the frame as he would drive the first pitch of his at-bat deep over the right field fence for a three-run home run, his first of the season, pushing UC out to a 7-0 lead.
Comas would walk a pair in the second, but once again would settle to leave both stranded on the bases with the Eagles coming out scoreless in the second. Stroub would be the at-bat responsible for putting runs on the board in the second, driving in a pair on a single to center, putting the Patriots out front 9-0 after two. After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third, Arellano would earn his third hit in as many innings, this one a solo home run, his fifth of the year, pushing the lead to 10-0.
Another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth for Asbury was followed by another run producing inning for the Patriots. After a bases loaded walk to Arellano to bring home a run, a double to left center would bring home another pair of runs for UC, giving UC a 13-0 lead after four innings of play. Comas would give up a run in the fifth on a pair of hits, but again would pitch his away out of another jam, stranding the bags full for the Eagles.
The Patriots would turn to their bullpen in the sixth and seventh as
Wyatt Wade and
Colton Easterwood would each toss a scoreless inning as UC would come away with the shortened game due to run rule after seven.
Comas would earn his first win as a Patriot going five innings allowing the one run on three hits and five walks while striking out seven.
UC returns to the diamond on Friday, March 1
st as they will begin a four-game series with the Foresters of Huntington University. First pitch is slated for 2 pm.
