Patriot Turnovers Spell Turmoil at Fourth-Ranked Campbellsville

Campbellsville, KY – The first quarter saw Cumberlands' offense looking solid, but a multitude of turnovers in the final three quarters of play would spell trouble for the Patriots as they were defeated by the NAIA fourth-ranked Tigers of Campbellsville Tigers 83-48. The loss moves the Patriots to a game under .500 on the year with a 12-13 record.

UC opened the game with a three from Hannah Lawson, giving them an early lead, but it would be the only one they would have in the contest. Campbellsville would go on a 13-2 run to take an eight-point lead, their largest of the quarter. The Patriots would rally to bring it back within five with the score 25-20 after one. The second was a rough quarter for UC as ten turnovers aided in a 15-4 Tiger run over the first five minutes of the period. Cumberlands would trail by 19 at the break with the score 47-28.

The third quarter saw the two teams much more even with one another as the Tigers would extend the lead, but only by three points as the score stood at 64-42. The fourth quarter again though spelled trouble for the Patriots as they would close the game going hitting just one of their final eight shot attempts while committing another nine turnovers as Campbellsville would defeat UC 83-48.

Leading the way scoring for Cumberlands was Shayla Simpson with 11 points to go with three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Hannah Lawson added ten points with four boards and a block. The Patriots shot 32% from the floor in the game, but just 20.8% in the second half while committed 32 turnovers in the loss. UC would outrebound the Tigers 39-34 in the contest, but Campbellsville would score 40 points off turnovers, 36 points in the paint, and get 33 points from their bench.

UC continues their road trip on Saturday, February 9th as they take on the Tigers of Georgetown College. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm.
