Free Throws Difference in Patriots’ Loss at Georgetown

Georgetown, KY – UC Women's Basketball looked to end a rough patch of games today as they traveled to take on the Tigers of Georgetown College. Unfortunately, free throws became the deciding factor in the contest as five Patriots would foul out, sending the Tigers to the line 41 times in the game, converting on 28 of those, in a 68-65 win over Cumberlands. The loss bumps UC to 12-14 on the season and winless in conference play.

Georgetown would jump out on a 14-4 run in the first six minutes of the game, but UC would battle back, cutting the lead to just five at the end of the frame with the score 21-16. The Tigers would find a groove in the second quarter as they would open the lead up to as much as 13, but a basket by Callia Cropp at the end of the quarter cut the lead to 11 at the break at 40-29.

The Patriots would come out in the third with a chip on their shoulder and dominated the first eight minutes of the period, tying the game with just over a minute to go in the frame. Three Tiger free throws would spell the difference in the quarter, putting Georgetown up 55-52 heading to the fourth. The Tigers would hit just two shots in the fourth quarter, but eight made free throws after 11 fouls by the Patriots would give the Tigers the 68-65 win over UC.

Leading the charge for the Patriots was Kayla Bruner with 21 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Jasmine Rhodes chipped in 16 points off the bench with nine rebounds and a pair of assists before fouling out. UC shot 44.2% from the field and 83.3% from the charity stripe (15-18) in the game.

Cumberlands outrebounded Georgetown 41-26 in the game, but the biggest difference in the game was foul count and total free throws. UC was called for 34 fouls compared to GC's 17 with the Tigers taking 41 trips to the line, converting on 28. The Tigers were led on the game by Malaka Frank with 18 points, five steals, and three rebounds.
