Kansas City, MO – A trio of University of the Cumberlands women's basketball players were named among the 148 student-athletes from across the NAIA to be named 2018-2019 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, announced by the national office Monday.
The three Patriots named NAIA Scholar-Athletes were juniors
Anna Nelson and
Rebecca Lewter along with senior
Shayla Simpson. The Patriots ladies finished the season 14-17 overall, being eliminated in the Mid-South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals by Campbellsville University to end their season.
Simpson played in all 31 games for UC this season while starting in 24 of those games. She averaged 13.9 points per game along with 6.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists and steals per contest. Lewter played in 28 games this year for the Patriots (four starts) averaging 1.3 points and 1.4 rebounds. Nelson competed in 14 games (one start) for Cumberlands this year averaging just under a point per game along with 1.7 rebounds per game.
In order to be nominated by an institution, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.
