Richmond, IN – The third-ranked University of the Cumberlands women's lacrosse team netted the final 12 goals of game as the Patriots pulled away for the 23-4 win over Earlham Saturday afternoon at Darrell Beane Stadium. With the win the Patriots notch their tenth win of the season, marking the third straight year that UC achieved that plateau.
Cumberlands got out to a quick start as
Jaclyn Berry netted back-to-back goals to give UC a 2-0 lead 53 seconds into the first half.
Shea West added a pair of goals before
Katie Brewer converted a free position attempt to extend the Patriots lead to 5-0 six minutes in. After the two teams traded goals,
Trinity Brown scooped a ground ball, raced up field, and netted her third goal of the season to give Cumberlands a 7-1 edge with 21:02 left in the first half. Earlham cut the lead to 7-2, however, the Patriots responded with Berry and
Emily Heim combining for the next four goals to push UC's lead to 11-2 midway through the first half. The Quakers (6-3) notched two straight goals to cut the lead to 11-4 with 9:12 remaining. The Patriots ramped up the pressure added four unanswered goals, including a pair from West to extend UC's lead to 15-4 at the break.
The Patriots were in complete control of the second half outscoring Earlham 8-0 over the final 30 minutes. Berry got that scoring started 13 seconds into the half, while Heim added a free position goal to push the lead to 17-4. Ricchaizzi netted three of the Patriots final six goals, including a falling down shot for her final goal for the 23-4 final.
Berry led the way for Cumberlands with eight goals as West chipped in five. Ricchaizzi added four goals, while Heim finished with a hat trick and scooped six draw controls.
Elizabeth Fladung recorded a team-high eight draw controls and four ground balls.
Emily Crump and
Emily Cabrera split time in goal and combined for two saves.
The Patriots return to the field Monday, March 25, when they travel to Fort Wayne, IN to face fourth-ranked Indiana Tech in a rematch of last year's national semifinals. The game is slated for 3 p.m. with live video and live stats available
