Patriot Baseball Takes Series over Tigers on Wild Pitch Walkoff Win

Williamsburg, KY – A wild Saturday would bring one of the best games of the Mid-South Conference to Doyle Buhl Stadium as the UC Baseball team would take on the Tigers of Campbellsville with the winner earning the series win and taking a ton of momentum into the rest of their conference season. After trailing three different times during the contest, the Patriots would finally gain the lead when it mattered most, walking off with a 10-9 win over the Tigers. The victory moves the Patriots to 30-5 on the year and 7-2 in MSC play.

Campbellsville would take the lead early on a solo home run by leadoff hitter Adbiel Morales, pushing the Tigers out front 1-0. The Patriots answered in the bottom of the inning on a pair of RBI singles by Raudy Martinez and Bryan Benz, giving UC a 2-1 lead. A trio of runs from the Tigers would score in the third as Campbellsville would regain the lead 4-2. An error would lead to one run while a two-run single from Tyler Deason would add three more runs to the Tigers lead, pushing the lead to 7-2.

Cumberlands would cut into the lead in the fifth with two on and one down. Bryan Leef would send a 1-1 pitch deep over the left field fence, his team and conference leading 13th of the season, to cut the lead to 7-5 after five. Two more runs would cross in the seventh for the Patriots, one on a wild pitch and another on a RBI double off the bat of Robbie Stroub, would tie the game up at 7-7.

In the eighth with two down, Campbellsville would retake the lead in a battle of an at-bat between CU's Brandon Douglas and UC's reliever Colton Easterwood. On a 12 pitch at-bat with one on, Douglas would finally get a solid piece of an Easterwood fastball and send it over the left field fence for a two-run home run, giving the Tigers a 9-7 lead. Cumberlands would then respond again in the bottom of the frame. With two down, Orley Arellano would reach first on an error by Campbellsville's Marco Murillo, bringing Martinez to the plate. On the first pitch of his at-bat, Martinez would crush the pitch deep over the left field fence for his 10th home run of the season to tie the game at 9-9 after eight innings of play.

Arellano would come in from center field to pitch the ninth. Two Tigers would reach, but a pair of big strikeouts would end the inning stranding both on. Benz started off the inning with a laser shot off the top of the wall, putting the winning run on in scoring position. A sacrifice bunt by Stroub pushed Benz to third with one down. J.C. Santos would strikeout to put two away with Benz on third. As Kevin Rolon would step in, the first pitch would get in the dirt and past catcher Douglas, allowing pinch runner Marquis Orozco to come in and score the game winner on the wild pitch, pushing UC to victory and winning the series over the Tigers.

Arellano would get the win throwing the final inning of the game, allowing no runs on a hit and a walk while fanning two. Starter Hampton Clark went three innings allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. Colton Easterwood got plenty of time in relief today, going 4.2 innings allowing two earned runs on three hits and a walk while sitting two down on strikes.

Cumberlands returns to Doyle Buhl Stadium on Wednesday, April 3rd as they host Midway University for a non-conference matchup. First pitch is set for 5 pm.
