Patriots Overpowered by Grizzlies in Mid-Week Doubleheader

Williamsburg, KY – Strikeouts in the batter's box and errors on the field haunt the Patriots as they drop two to fifth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett on home turf. In the doubleheader, the Patriots struck-out 10 times at the plate while recording only five hits on the day. Cumberlands falls to 6-8 on the year after two five-inning run, run-rule losses on Thursday.

Game One: 10-0 Loss
As batters, Emily Jasper and Acacia Gray each connect with a ball, combining for the two in the hit-column. Paige Parker started in the circle for the Patriots, allowing six of the 10 Grizzlies' runs in two innings of work for the loss. Sydney Maynard and Krystin Wilson came into the game in relief, each recording a strikeout on the day.

The Patriots started off strong with a three-and-out top half of the first, highlighted by a foul-territory snag by Meryn Livingston. In the bottom of the first, Cumberlands attempted to gain momentum after Jasper got on base off an infield single. Jasper recorded a stolen base to move into scoring position but was ultimately stranded on after a fly-ball to right field ended the inning.

After a run scored in the second inning, the Grizzlies pulled away in the third after recording six runs off five hits and an error to bring the score to 7-0. The Patriots threatened after Gray slashed a single through the left side for the second hit of the game, however they were unable to move her around the diamond. A three-score fifth inning for Georgia Gwinnett stretched the score-margin to 10. Two more Patriots were left on base in the fifth as the game ended by run-rule.

Game Two: 12-1 Loss
After a weekend of rest, Jessica Webb started in the circle, offering nine runs in Thursday night's loss. Over 3.2 innings of work, the junior-transfer delivered three strikeouts in addition to the two fly-outs and four groundouts in the game. Sidney Pennycuff made her second appearance of the season as a reliever in the fourth inning, tabbing a pair of strikeouts against the nine batters faced in the no-decision. Three Patriots garnered a hit apiece in game two, however was only able to gather one run across the plate off an RBI double.

Georgia Gwinnett opened the game with a run in the first, however Gray stopped the production short with a leaping grab to end the inning. The Patriots responded with a score of their own as Gray continued her big inning with an RBI double off the left field fence to drive home Emily Jasper.

In the second, the Patriots continued to stick with the Grizzlies defensively. A batted ball up the middle did not catch Webb by surprise in the circle, who was able to block the ball and make the groundout. Georgia Gwinnett was able to round a pair of runs in the third however to claim the 3-1 advantage. Trying to gain momentum of their own, Sarah Biggerstaff was narrowly beat by the shortstop's throw to first in a close hit.

The Grizzlies opened the flood gates once again, this time in the fourth inning. Loading the bases twice overwhelmed the Patriots pitching staff, allowing six runs to cross the plate on three hits and an error to extend the score margin. Cumberlands placed two runners on base as Corinne Haverland singled up the middle and Biggerstaff delivered a blow through the left side for a two-out rally. The Patriots were unable to overcome the 11-run deficit in the fifth and fell 12-1 after five innings of action.
