Williamsburg, KY – The UC Baseball team continued their winning ways on Thursday as mother nature forced the Patriots to change their schedule up for the weekend, pushing their three-game set with the University of Pikeville to begin with a doubleheader today. UC carried over dominate offensive firepower from Wednesday's 16-4 non-conference win over Kentucky State with a pair of dominating shutout wins over the Bears. Game one was cut short with a 10-0 walk-off win in seven innings with game two, a seven-inning scheduled game, was won by a score of 11-0. The pair of wins pushes UC to 37-5 on the season and 9-2 in Mid-South Conference action.
Game One: Hurley Hurls Another Gem
Zach Hurley took to the hill for game one of the doubleheader and had history on his side. In two previous starts, Hurley went 2-0 with 14 strikeouts. He added to that today with his third straight win over the Bears in three seasons. Hurley earned the complete game win to move to 7-1 going seven innings allowing no runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine.
Scoring began in the second for UC with a leadoff double from
Jose Rojas. An RBI single by
Bryan Benz would drive in Rojas, giving UC a 1-0 lead. After loading the bases with one down, a wild pitch would allow all runners to advance 90 feet, bringing Benz in to make it 2-0 Patriots. In the third, a one out single from
Bryan Leef along with a walk to Rojas put two on. A pickoff move turned bad for the Bears with a wild throw into the outfield, allowing all runners to advance two bags, bring Leef in to score to make it 3-0 Patriots. Benz would follow with a two-run home run to left field, his tenth of the season, to extend the lead to 5-0.
Entering the bottom of the fourth, UC would put runners on the corners with one down. A hard-hit groundball to the left side by
Raudy Martinez would result in a fielder's choice, bringing
Kevin Rolon in to score to push the Patriots out front to 6-0. After a few scoreless innings, the seventh would see the game's final runs. With the bases loaded and one down, a deep shot to the left side would result in a two-run single for Benz as he finished the day with five RBI. A two-run walk-off single followed from
Kevin Rolon would end the game with Cumberlands on top 10-0.
Game Two: Patriots Pound the Long Ball
Scoring would begin in the bottom of the third. A pair of Bears' errors would result in a pair of runs for UC, one being unearned, as Cumberlands jumped out front 2-0.
Jose Rojas would add to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to right field, his third of the season, making it 3-0 Patriots. In the fifth, it was a pair of long balls that would more than double the lead.
Pedro Nazario would belt a two-run shot to center field for his fifth home run of the season, making it 5-0 Patriots.
Raudy Martinez would add to his home run total as well with a two-run shot to left, his 12
th long ball of the year, to extend the lead to 7-0.
In the sixth,
Orley Arellano would propel the Patriots to a double-digit lead. With the bases loaded and one down, Arellano would triple to deep right center field to make it 10-0 Pats. An insurance run on an RBI groundout from Martinez would score the 11
th run for UC, giving them a pair of shutout wins in conference action. The win in game two would go to
Moise Carrasco in relief as he went four innings allowing no runs on one hit and a walk while sitting two on strikes. Starter
Josh Avila went three innings allowing no runs on five hits and a walk while fanning one.
The Patriots look to finish out the three-game set on Friday, April 12
th with a single nine-inning game beginning at 1 pm.
